These are the beauty products the FJ team keep on their desks

WORDS BY FASHION JOURNAL

For pre-meeting refreshes.

Working at the same desk every day, it’s not uncommon for the space to become an extension of the inside of your handbag. Some people are neater than others, yes, but most of us will keep a stash of snacks, stationery or beauty products within arm’s reach. At Fashion Journal, the latter is particularly important.

We like nosy people. Don’t be shy, head to our Beauty section for more.

Working in the realm of fashion, lifestyle and beauty, it’s not uncommon for new products to come across our desks. It’s interesting to see the top-tier products the team chooses to keep in their workspace arsenals – for some, SPF is most important and for others, it’s all about travel-sized fragrance. Read on to find out the beauty products the Fashion Journal team keeps on their desks.

I don’t wear makeup to the office every day but on the days that I do, it’s usually because I have an event after work. This means the products I’m using have to work overtime to last from morning to night. The Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray is an everyday staple in my makeup routine, so you can be sure I have the mini bottle sitting on my desk to spritz for longevity and hydration throughout the day.

Like the rest of the FJ team, I always have a hand cream within arm’s reach, and my current fave is the L’Occitane Almond Delicious Hands. While L’Occitane’s hand creams are a cult favourite, this particular one is perfectly moisturising, fast-absorbing and doesn’t leave the greasy or oily residue that other hand creams may have. Finally, I try not to leave the house without walking through a perfume cloud à la that one scene in Hannah Montana – and just in case I’m running late, I always have a travel size on hand. Right now, my favourite is Who is Elijah’s Nomad Eau De Parfum.

I’ve become quite good at applying SPF50 each morning and while I’m sure it’s helpful to block the minimal UV rays that penetrate my car’s windscreen at 8am, it’s not doing much by the time I step outside for lunch. So I now keep a miniature version of Ultra Violette’s Lean Screen in my work bag.

It sits next to one of four travel Le Labo fragrances from the brand’s Discovery Set that I spritz before meetings. Likewise, I keep a mini tube of Benefit’s Gimme Brow on my desk to fluff up my brows and make me look slightly more awake ahead of meetings. Both make me feel a little more ‘put together’ and a little less like a gremlin that hasn’t moved from her swivel chair, nor broken her line of sight, in hours.

I was a devoted Clinique Black Honey girl after its TikTok resurgence but eventually realised that even though it was meant to suit ‘every’ skin tone it simply didn’t suit me. The Clinique Pink Honey was the perfect compromise – it’s a very subtle pink that goes on smoothly and is hydrating enough to keep applying throughout the day. I have never been a girl who can wear different perfumes depending on the occasion. I am a YSL Libre girl all day every day.

I snagged my latest top-up at Christmas time and managed to get it in a Christmas gift set, giving me a tiny travel-sized version, perfect for the desk to pop on before meeting. There’s also nothing worse than leaving the house with your hair looking perfect only to be the victim of Melbourne weather, so I keep a travel-sized Kérastase Original Hair Oil with me all the time to run through my ends.

I have chronically dry lips (the result of a significant chunk of time spent on Roaccutane in my teens), so Dr Lipp’s Original Nipple Balm is a must on my desk. It’s medical-grade lanolin and keeps my lips quenched without me having to reapply it every 15 minutes like other lip balms. I like to have a lip colour on hand too, and my favourite at the moment is Mecca Max’s Glaze Phase Lip Oil in Blackberry Glaze. It’s super hydrating and adds a subtle sheen and a light purple-pink tint.

I apply it before meetings or if I’m leaving the office for a work event and want a little pick-me-up. I like having an ever-changing rotation of scents on hand, and right now I’m into I Am Verdant from Vyrao’s High Five set of travel-sized fragrances. Its size means I can keep it in my pen holder, along with my lip products. Finally, a hand cream is a non-negotiable desk product for me (my hands are almost as dry as my lips, shout out to psoriasis!). My current favourite is Liberty Belle’s Intensive Rejuvenating Handcream. It’s super moisturising without leaving a greasy residue.

At the office I oscillate between full-face glam days and going completely makeup-free, so I like to be prepped either way. I’ll always keep a lip balm close by – my current pick is Lips! by Go-To. It’s hydrating without leaving too much residue and works well on top of other lip colours. For the makeup-free days, I keep Tomorrow-Today Beauty’s Tech Protect Serum right by my computer. With so much time spent staring at a screen, it’s important to keep the skin shielded from blue light. I find if it’s sitting on my desk, I’m more likely to apply. The same goes for hand cream, which is necessary as I’m a chronic cuticle-picker. My current favourite is Grown Alchemist’s Vanilla and Orange Peel.
