How it feels/smells/looks

The best part about Function of Beauty is that you can choose how it feels, smells and looks. The entire premise of the brand is to create haircare that is totally personalised to you. Customers are asked to complete a set of questions at the checkout, like choosing your hair type, structure and scalp moisture. You can even choose the fragrance and colour. For mine, I chose an essential oil blend and purple colour.

Why I like it

Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all formula, the brand creates shampoo and conditioners based on an individual’s needs. Not only do you get to choose final elements like scent and colour, but you also get to focus the formula on your hair goals. I chose to improve on areas like volume, oil control, brassiness, curl and colour definition. Best of all, each bottle arrives with your name on it, so it won’t get mixed up with anyone else’s in the shower.

On top of that, you can also elect to purchase the products once-off, or under a subscription ranging from once a month, to every three or six months.

Areas for improvement

There wasn’t really anything to improve. I wash my hair quite frequently (every day) and the shampoo/conditioner combo was able to reduce brassiness without overtoning my hair. I also didn’t need to use much product for it to work its magic.

However, since the company is based in the US, I would take that into account when ordering – standard shipping took about two weeks to arrive.
