Top Three: Melbourne makeup artist Meg McConville shares her holy grail beauty products
WORDS BY CAIT EMMA BURKE
“My everyday look, that I’ve gotten down to seven minutes, includes a wing. The ease of this liner is definitely to thank for how quick my routine is.”
I’m a notoriously nosy person when it comes to products. I want to know whether you double cleanse at night, and if so which cleansers you use. I want to know if there’s some special hair contraption or pair of tweezers that have (hyperbole warranted) changed your life. I want to know what curl definer you use and which lip balm you swear by.
In short, I adore products. This is why I’ve asked some of our favourite Australian creatives for their top three products, AKA the products they simply cannot live without. The scope is broad – it can genuinely be any three products, as long as they’re the three they value the most.

Joining us this week is Melbourne makeup artist Meg McConville. Known for her maximalist, experimental looks, Meg pulls inspiration from drag queens, underground subcultures and ’80s music, and is a go-to makeup artist in Melbourne’s fashion scene. Below, she shares the three products she couldn’t live without.
Product one: Urban Decay 24/7 Inks Liquid Liner in Whisky

How did you first discover this product?
I was given it by Mecca in a gift pack.
What is it, what does it do and why do you love it?
My everyday look, that I’ve gotten down to seven minutes, includes a wing. The ease of this liner is definitely to thank for how quick my routine is. It mimics a paintbrush, which I usually use for eyeliner, so I find it so easy to use. Plus, the tip is so sharp and the grip is perfect for how I hold brushes.
Where would you find it and who would you recommend it to?
Anyone who’s struggling with eyeliners or just loves a wing. You can find it at the Mecca Max stores (not Cosmeticas). I go with the brown option but there are loads of colours to choose from if you want to play.
Product two: Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders

How did you first discover this product?
I think I discovered this product like seven-ish years ago. I went away from it for a while now and have come back to it in a huge way. They’ve also brought out a lot of different shades since.
What is it, what does it do and why do you love it?
It’s a finishing powder that comes in a range of different lighting colours. It’s not supposed to match your skin perfectly, it more mimics different lighting and creates this softness to the face. For example, I love the colour Incandescent Light under my eyes and through my T-zone. It’s super white when you look at it but it just blurs everything! These also work so well in photos, you’ll think you’ve got a filter.
Where would you find it and who would you recommend it to?
Anyone and everyone, you just might need to play around a little, some can be too glittery so make sure you’ve got a good one for you. Also, they’re not setting powders so if you are a bit oilier, make sure you’re setting before applying these. You can find Hourglass at any Mecca store.
Product three: Morphe 18CT Matte Essentials Artistry Palette

How did you first discover this product?
I actually can’t remember but I think it was a gift!
What is it, what does it do and why do you love it?
It’s a matte eyeshadow palette with all cool and neutral tones. I’m so into cool tones at the moment and so often what I thought was a cool-toned palette turned out to be a lot warmer or not what I expected. This baby is $28 and has 18 shades in it. I have one in my kit which I take to every shoot and one personal one which is probably my most used palette at the moment.
Where would you find it and who would you recommend it to?
Anyone who loves a cool-toned matte eye look. It’s also great for those wanting to play around with different shades but not wanting to commit to a more expensive palette. With an eye primer, you wouldn’t know the difference between this and a $100 palette. It should be available in Morphe and Mecca Maxima.
