The best bra styles and brands for big boobs, from someone with a double D cup

WORDS BY CAT FORSYTH

Five of the best bras for bigger busts.

I’ve written previously about the perils of being a bigger-boobed girl – whether it’s the creepy, chest-directed stares from older men, the aching back and shoulder pain after a long day, or even the boob sweat, there are more than a few issues that come with having a larger bust. When I suddenly went from a (small) B cup to a full-on D cup (and now double D) it was a shock. I basically had to throw out all my old bras and buy a whole new set of undergarments that actually fitted.

I played around with different styles for a bit, while also trying to adjust to having a (suddenly) big chest. For a while, I wasn’t sure what suited me and couldn’t find comfortable bras. But after a bit of trial and error, I’ve finally found my go-to pieces to suit my bigger bust. If you are a bigger-boobed gal in need of a new bra or two, look to these styles for some ideas.

Supportive bralette

In the age of goblin mode and feral girl summer, I’ve basically just stopped giving a shit. I’m past the days of wearing twisty, uncomfortable bras with underwire that digs into my skin. However, as I have a bigger chest, going bra-free (while liberating) isn’t always super comfy. When I’m looking for robust but also appropriate for goblin-mode levels of comfort, I turn to my Nala Support Wirefree Bralette. I could jump up and down or run for the tram in this bra and wouldn’t feel a thing – it’s that supportive.

Classic underwire

When I said I was done with uncomfortable lingerie and digging underwire, I meant it. But luckily, I’ve found an everyday bra from Fayreform that doesn’t hurt a bit – you’ll find no digging here. This bra is my favourite, and so easy to wear. I love the perky shape it gives me, just the opposite of uni-boob (which I had a serious case of before buying this bra). The thick straps are perfect for bigger chests, as it means there’s no strain on either the bra or my shoulders. I feel perfectly supported in this one.

Sports underwire

This Bendon bra is the only sports bra I’ll wear (not that I’m working out anyway). I can wear this one all day comfortably. Similar to the classic underwire, the wide straps are really supportive and don’t hurt my shoulders at all. From high school until mid-last year, I thought sports bras had to be those stretchy, flimsy ones you can buy at the shopping centre.

But, as I discovered when I went ‘proper’ bra shopping, sports bras can (and should, in my opinion) have cups. Rather than ending up with the usual uniboob situation I found myself in with most sports bras, the separate cups completely stop my boobs from bouncing around while I’m active.

Lacy bralette

Choosing a bra for a long-haul plane trip is always a bit difficult for me (not a bad problem to have, I know). I don’t want to go braless as I’ll be walking around the airport and needing support, but I don’t want to be confined once I get on a plane for seven-plus hours.

When it came to my recent trip away, I knew that one of my Chou Chou bralettes would be a perfect choice. Pretty as can be and so comfortable you won’t remember it’s there, a little lace bralette is a perfect choice – even for bigger-boobed ladies. As long as you’re wearing the right size for you, you’ll find these bras fit beautifully.

Like choosing the right bra for a plane trip, choosing a bra for a date can be quite the conundrum too. I never want to feel like I’m wearing lingerie for anyone else but me (at least on a first date), but I still want to feel sexy and gorgeous. When you have a bigger chest, wearing certain tops can make you look sexier than intended (e.g. men will look you right in the boobs and forget all about the eyes). One of my favourite bits of lingerie, and my ‘old reliable’ when it comes to dates, is this lacy, cornflower blue balconette bra I have. It’s the perfect balance between totally comfortable and exquisitely sexy.
