Forever 21 forced to apologise after releasing a T-shirt alluding to rape

Who approved this?

American retail giant, Forever 21, has caused mass controversy after releasing a men’s tee that reads:

“Don’t say maybe if you want to say no.”

The graphic shirt purportedly promotes sexual assault, suggesting the onus of consent lies with others and alluding to victim-blaming. The the problematic nature of this tee is self-evident.

It’s therefore shocking the garment made it all the way to the retail stage. Surely a brand like Forever 21 would have a few sets of eyes (at least) review the tee, before finally giving it the all-clear.

After an expected social media backlash condemning the store for its purported promotion of sexual assault, Forever 21 pulled the shirt and issued the following statement:

“Forever 21 strives to exemplify the highest ethical standards and takes feedback and product concerns very seriously… We sincerely apologize to anyone who was offended by the product.”

Ummm thanks guys, but the damage is already done.

It really begs the questions, what was Forever 21 thinking? Who approved the shirt? And who would buy or wear it?

Not us, Forever 21.
