Sotheby’s London will be holding a rare fashion photography sale

Going once, going twice.

Lovers of fashion photography, prepare to lose your minds. London-based, innovative global art business, Sotheby’s, will be holding a sale of fashion photography’s most elite works.

Starting May 19, Sotheby’s will be auctioning the rare collection of works, ranging from 20th century pieces to the present.

Photos from fashion’s most legendary vintage photographers will feature including Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton, Irving Penn and Peter Lindbergh. Images from modern day photographers will also be up for grabs from the likes of Miles Aldridge and David LaChapelle.

Sotheby’s photograph specialist, Brandei Estes, says the works have been carefully chosen for the auction. Each represents the continued interest and collectability of fashion photography.

If you, like us, are used to buying $15 Audrey Hepburn silhouette artworks from IKEA, the prices of the photographs probably won’t come as a shock. If anything, they’ll more likely confirm the fact you won’t be owning one any time soon.

Photos from the collection will go for anywhere between $86,000 to $331,000 USD.

“For hours she danced and sang and flirted — she did Marilyn Monroe. And then there was the inevitable drop. And when the night was over and the white wine was over and the dancing was over, she sat in the corner like a child, with everything gone. I saw her sitting quietly without expression on her face, and I walked towards her but I wouldn’t photograph her without her knowledge of it. And as I came with the camera, I saw that she was not saying no.” – Richard Avedon on his Marilyn Monroe 1957 portrait.

It’s anecdotes like these that contribute to making photographs of fashion’s most iconic individuals so extremely sought after.

And so extremely out of reach for us commoners.
