Thomas Alleman’s American Apparel photography

“Real LA versus hip fashion fantasy LA”.

We’ve all become familiar with American Apparel’s ads – nearly always controversial and usually depicting a lycra clad female in should-be-impossible-to-pull positions. Now, American photographer Thomas Alleman makes us look at them in another way. In a photo series that is even more striking than the original ads themselves, Alleman photographs the posters for the infamous clothing brand around the streets and vacant lots of its home town, LA.

The result partly celebrates the direct, sleek and simple designs of the AA campaigns, but also instill a sense of discomfort. The sexual nature of the posters become even more apparent in contrast to the urban landscape of everyday LA Alleman so perfectly captures.
