Tokyo’s Issey Miyake retrospective is now open to the public

And it’s big.

Finally the time has come, Issey Miyake’s retrospective exhibition is open to the public.

Examining more than four decades of the designer’s inspiration and innovation, the exhibition showcases both archival pieces from the past and interactive works from the present.

Divided into three sections, the exhibit celebrates Miyake’s work, while also offering informative demonstrations detailing how some of the garments are made. Notes will be taken.

In true Miyake style, the first exhibition room holds a row of mannequins made from 365 panels of lazer-cut paper, assembled to replicate the human form. The second room, in similar fashion, features mannequins made of clear resin, wearing works pulled from the designer’s collections from 1980 through 1984.

The crescendo of the exhibition however comes in the massive third exhibition room, where recurring themes are celebrated with the designer’s most ground-breaking works. Littered with dozens of mannequins, the room centers around a full-sized, staffed, working machine, which demonstrates live how the famous Issey Miyake pleat is created.

Basically, you go, you win.
