From the office, to the party, to the farmer’s market.
When you think of summer style essentials, bloomers probably aren’t the first thing that comes to your mind. But for Melbourne-based designer Jess Grindell, these frilly Victorian-era garments are perfect fodder for her eponymous label, known for its unique take on modern femininity.
Bloomers first came into fashion as early as the 1850s and were favoured by working middle-class women, including suffragette Amelia Bloomer, a trailblazer for women’s rights. The ‘bloomer costume‘ consisted of a short tailored jacket and a petticoat falling just below the knee. In those days, bloomers were long, loose Turkish-style trousers that gathered at the ankles, exposing a sliver of skin – a shocking and controversial fashion statement at the time.

It’s a far cry from the micro lengths we’ve seen on the runways this year, from Miu Miu to Collina Strada. Whether they’re worn low-waisted and oversized with knee-high boots, or high-waisted with a simple T-shirt and heels, bloomers are proving to be an exceptionally versatile, transeasonal piece. Below, Jess shares a few favourite ways to style her own bloomers, perfect for the unpredictable weather this time of year.
For midweek drinks with the girlies
Wednesday is giving drinks with girls, girl dinner, cozy hoodies over the day’s outfit after long hours on the tools. Nothing makes more sense than matching the Luminous Bloomers with the Pocket Money hoodies. Both are one of a kind! These bloomers are made from deadstock tie fabric – I love the idea of using a material traditionally used for masculine items of clothing and turning it into the sweetest pair of shorts to exist!
I’ve also hopped on the Ugg bandwagon this year, I can totally see what the hype was about now. You can trot into the house comfy and casual but I do keep my outside Uggs seperate from my inside Uggs.
For a Friday night boogie
Fridays are as glam as you can be. You want to be both seen and heard. Metallic mixed with a bit of skin, sexy high boots, always with a heel that makes your feet sore the next day.
As for these bloomers, I like to wear a size larger for a more low-waisted fit, too, it kinda makes them appear more like a skirt. I’m also into statement jewellery at the moment – none of this dainty stuff. Go big or go home.
For a Sunday morning at the farmer’s market (in my dreams)
Gotta admit… I’ve never been to a Sunday market in my time on this Earth but if I were to cosplay the wholesome reality, I would wear a cute little T-shirt. This is the first T-shirt I’ve ever owned. Simple, slay and Yohji. Then something comfortable on your feet because your body is a temple, right? I go for my impractical trotters, the Melissa /Y Project collab. People say they’re super uncomfortable to walk in, I say it’s all a mindset. Just slip your foot in and you’re ready to go!
For the office
On Mondays, we’re back to business. The vibe is serious, sleek and sexy with these ivory silk crepe bloomers. I have this slouchy Margiela jumper I’ve lived in all winter and now into spring. It feels like a warm hug and makes getting out of bed at the start of the week a little easier. I’ve really been struggling to find knits that aren’t too chunky for the cold weather that this beautiful city provides us with for most of the year.
