Just One Thing: Tiara Vella
PHOTOGRAPHY AND STYLING – KAITLYN BOSNJAK
MAKEUP – GHADA NOUH
MODEL – TIARA VELLA
“I’m no activist or anything, but I truly believe that it all starts with you.”
No one has just one job these days, and creatives certainly don’t. We’re a generation of multi-hyphenates and freelancers, just trying to make our way in the gig economy. Photographer Kaitlyn Bosnjak captures emerging models who are doing just that, breaking into the fashion industry and learning more about the world. While she had them, we thought we’d ask a couple of questions about the people behind the faces. And finally, what they would tell our audience if given the chance to say just one thing.
Hey Tiara! So how old are you?
A cute 27.
Where do you live?
Currently living in Redfern, Sydney in a house of creatives It’s honestly the greatest.
Other than modelling, what do you do with your time?
I dance A LOT, I’m very fortunate to have found my outlet. I really enjoy being in my body, whether that means going to the gym or doing yoga or pilates.
Tell us about your heritage.
I am Eurasian. My mother’s side is Malaysian and Indonesian, my father’s side Maltese. I grew up in Australia but spent the last few years living in Bali.
What do you do to switch off?
I really love overdoing it. Everything is so fast-paced in Sydney – I love the push, but it’s made me realise how important rest is. I love swimming in the ocean or bushwalking. I try to meditate every day and [I] have the world’s best acupressure therapist that I aim to see every six weeks.
What are you most passionate about?
It’s kind of hard to answer, to pinpoint what to dedicate myself to when there is so much wrong with the world. We are not being kind to the earth, we are taking too much from it and it’s beginning to fight back. The climate is a clear cry for help! We also aren’t being kind to one another, there’s still so much poverty and mistreatment around the world and in our own back yard.
What are you doing to fix it?
I just try. I’m no activist or anything, but I truly believe that it all starts with you. If every individual makes a little effort we can slowly prevent the decay of the earth. Reduce consumption of animal produce, recycle and reuse, walk when you can, be mindful of water usage, unlearn and educate yourself, listen to people when they are talking to you and be genuine with your time and attention.
