Kate Sylvester’s new collection celebrates iconic artist Frances Hodgkins

Words by Sarah Pradolin

A collaboration like no other.

The new offering from Kate Sylvester pays homage to New Zealand artist Francis Hodgkins.

A painter and pioneer, Hodgkins is celebrated internationally for her contemporary works and ability to break down gender barriers. She was the first female to have her work hung at London’s Royal Academy of Arts and the first woman to teach at the prestigious Académie Colarossi in Paris.

The AW19 collection, Frances, borrows four of the artist’s textile designs from the 1920s, which Sylvester discovered at New Zealand’s Te Papa Tongarewa museum. Reworked by for the collection, they appear across dresses, skirts and silk scarves in colours of blood orange, powder blue, neon pink and peach.
