What people wore to Laneway Festival in Melbourne

Words by Fashion Journal

Spots, stripes and Brat green.

At Laneway on Valentine’s Day, tens of thousands descended on Melbourne’s Flemington Park. The girlies were out in full force, ready for a stacked lineup of (mostly) female headliners including Charli xcx, Clairo, Remi Wolf, Olivia Dean and Beabadoobee, among others.

The street style was diverse but expectedly brat. Everywhere you looked, neon green was scattered throughout the crowd: on T-shirts, caps, hair clips, eyeliner and G-strings. We lost count of the low-rise mini skirts, jorts, and sequin booty shorts we saw. The boho moto trend was also ubiquitous: wide belts, chain belts, lace skirts, denim and cowboy boots.

Some festival goers showed up in bright, retro sportswear. Others wore all-black ensembles featuring corset tops, emo stripe tights and Tumblrcore side fringes. Along with Y2K Von Dutch and Cavalli, the Melbourne crowd repped local designers like Briar Will, Karlaidlaw, Oats the Label, Jungles Jungles and L.H.

With rain predicted, most opted for sensible footwear – knee-high boots, Dr. Martens, comfortable Adidas Superstars, Sambas and Gazelles. Of the impractical trotters: ballet flats, heeled thongs and 8-inch platforms. Tabis were also spotted in the crowd, and on UK artist Olivia Dean, who talked FJ through her outfit.

There was endless creativity to be found in the details. Bags dripping in trinkets, polkadot manis, tinsel hair extensions, apples painted on breasts, and a lower back tattoo that simply read: lower back tattoo. (If that was you, please message us).

Brat references aside, there was plenty of classic stripes and spots both on and off the stage. Remi Wolf wore a white and blue polka dot top, Clairo looked like a modern day pin up in an off-shoulder striped dress, black sunglasses and signature headphones. Beabadoobee was giving pop-punk in a striped halter, studded belt, baggy pants and her iconic pink guitar.

At around 9pm, a torrential downpour sent crowds fleeing for shelter and pulling plastic ponchos over drenched skin. When the rain eventually stopped, those not on drugs realised how cold it was and flocked to the merch tent to buy $100 oversized Brat hoodies.

And there it was: a sea of neon Shreks stomping around a swamp, waiting for Charli xcx to take the stage. She performed in a teeny white skirt, cropped white T-shirt and bitchy black boots, and wrapped the night with one for the outnumbered millennials: ‘I Don’t Care’.
