WORDS BY MIA DENNIS AND IZZY WIGHT

Femme, colourful and flamboyant.

Describing her wardrobe as “femme, colourful and flamboyant”, Sydney-based model, artist and content creator Mia Dennis isn’t afraid of a statement piece. Mia was a key player on the Afterpay Australian Fashion Week runway, opening for designers Nicol & Ford and Gary Bigeni. A proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community, Mia uses fashion to express her queer identity when words can’t.

But as many will understand, fashion doesn’t always serve people outside of the ‘straight-size’ mould. Throughout her time working in the industry, Mia has curated a wardrobe filled with size-inclusive, sustainable designers and makers. Below, she shares 13 of her favourites.

Youkhana’s pieces are all bespoke, and literally one of a kind! Their pieces are all adjustable, meaning they can fit a range of body types. This is genuinely genius! I have been styled in their pieces in many shoots, my favourite was when I wore one of their pieces in my feature in Vogue Australia – it was one of my favourite looks.

Ramp Tramp Tramp Stamp

I adore every garment from Ramp Tramp Tramp Stamp (RTTS). Each garment fits my body so perfectly and they are all so unique. I love that many of their pieces can be worn in multiple different ways, giving so much life and longevity to these pieces. My favourite item of clothing is the low-rise jeans! Finding jeans that fit me and look great is something I really struggle to find. When I tried these on, I had tears in my eyes and felt so fab! I’ve been wearing them almost every day since I got them.

I have been obsessed with Maroske Peech for a while now and own many of their pieces. I love how whimsical and dreamy their garments are. The bonus is that most of their pieces can be worn in many different ways!

Such a gem in the industry! Olivia Rowan has a ready-to-wear range, however, she also does customs! I love that Olivia has an option for customs as they are perfectly made for your body… she is the best as she gives you agency over what you want and provides great advice in the collaborative process.

I love that this brand is made-to-order (and at an affordable price point), which is something fashion brands need to do more of to limit the production of clothing that doesn’t get sold. It is better for the environment and helps stop the overproduction and consumption of fashion. Plus, who doesn’t want something made to your measurements? It is tailor-made for you.

Wear Nala

Wear Nala gifted me [some pieces] a few months back, and I have never worn and owned such comfortable underwear and bras. The fabric is so soft and gentle and comes in beautiful neutrals as well as eccentric colours. They have a feature on the website where they have images of various chests, so you can find a chest that looks like yours and see how their bras would look on you! This brand values inclusivity in such a genuine way, their actions speak louder than words.

Gary Bigeni

Gary Bigeni offers a size range up to a size 22 and his current collection is gender-neutral, which is quite rare for an Australian brand. He has been in the industry for over 20 years, and it shows! I love that Gary Bigeni embraces colour and print in his clothing. It’s a breath of fresh air amongst the commercial Australian fashion industry’s obsession with beige linens.

With their local atelier based in Newtown, Nicol & Ford clothing is made to order and can be perfectly fitted to your body. They also do the best custom pieces. I have felt most myself and so divine in their pieces! I recently had the honour of opening their sophomore AAFW show and it was such a career highlight. They have dressed me on many an occasion and without fail, I have felt elegant and ethereal.

Beautiful silhouettes and chic eccentricity are what drew me to this brand. Their pieces are versatile in that they can be worn casually or formally. Their pieces are a revamp of your everyday essentials and are true investments. They have brought such fresh and unique energy into the scene. I was honoured to be featured as a muse for their online campaign for their latest collection. Their baby tee with shoulder pads equals perfection and versatility. OBSESSED.

And a special mention to these international brands…

Melissa Shoes

I have an unhealthy obsession with Melissa Shoes. I own three pairs of their shoes and I don’t plan on stopping there. I often centre my outfit around my Melissas. They are such good quality and have many styles for all year-’round. Their collabs are always a standout for me – like Collina Strada, Y/Projects Jean Paul Gaultier and Lazy Oaf, just to name a few. My favourite feature is that most of their shoes are scented and the scent hardly fades with wear. I want all shoes to smell of bubblegum and sweet dreams!

I have shopped at Nike religiously ever since I found out that they have an amazing size range and curve range. From sporty basics to fab athleisure, they have really amazing, unique items that elevate your running-errands outfit. My fave is a pastel neon green midi skirt that has a chunky zip along the vertical seam line!
