With changes starting this year.

For the first time in the history of the event, models working at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia will be granted private changing areas.

This comes after years of campaigning by participating models, who were unhappy with having to change in the same crowded spaces used by makeup artists and hair stylists.

While sharing these rooms is a long-running industry practice, it allows models almost no privacy while changing. There’s also a higher risk of media and photographers finding their way backstage while models are switching looks.

But this year, event organisers IMG are following the lead of runways like New York Fashion Week – who introduced private change rooms in 2018 – to increase the comfort of working models.

Fingers crossed other cities pick up the baton, both in Australia and around the world.
