WORDS BY IZZY WIGHT

“It’s so ridiculous, I wear it pretty much every day.”

We know personal style is a journey (I’m looking at you, Tumblr years), so we’ve introduced a new series Hey, I Like Your Style!, diving into the fashion psyche of our favourite creatives. We’re talking the good, the bad and the 2007.

While the internet has made our fashion icons feel closer than ever before, even the most effortless of outfits came from a closet with some (well-dressed) skeletons. Clickable product tags, photo archives and lives chronicled in 30-second clips just don’t tell the full story.

These are the stories behind the wardrobes, exploring how we develop our own personal style. There’s a brilliance behind the way we choose to express ourselves and at FJ, we know every outfit has a story.

This week, we’re stepping inside the wardrobe of Melbourne-based content creator, Olivia Walker. When she’s not documenting snippets of her pastel and Miffy-laden loft space, Liv is sharing her “laidback, cute and comfortable” outfits. A mix of versatile basics and colourful statement pieces, Liv’s style is all about having fun with fashion. Read on for her style journey.

Who are you and what do you like to wear?

Hello, I’m Liv. I’m a content creator from Melbourne (Naarm). I’d say my style is laidback, cute and comfortable. I prioritise comfort wearing mostly basics and elevating with cute, eclectic accessories.

What has your style evolution looked like? Do you feel like you’ve gained confidence in the way you dress?

I wore a black turtleneck every day for about five years up until three years ago, because it’s all I ever felt comfortable in. Even in 40-degree heat, I’d let my eczema flare up if it meant I didn’t have to show my arms.

I really struggled with self-image, so the idea of wearing the same thing every day was the easiest choice for me. I’ve since gained a little more confidence and fashion is now super fun for me. I enjoy wearing colour and different silhouettes now. I still have a long way to go though… one day I’ll be a mini skirt girlie.

Personal style is a journey. Have you ever felt like you needed to fit into a particular fashion box?

As I’ve gotten older, no. I’ve never cared too much about fitting into a fashion box or adhering to a particular style. I dress for myself and just want to be comfortable and cosy at all times.

Take us back to those awkward teenage years. Do you have any fashion regrets?

I always wish I’d been more experimental. I think of the people around me at the time who wore the whackiest things and I wish I’d had the confidence to dress as free spirited as them.

What are the most expensive and least expensive items in your wardrobe?

Most expensive is my Florist bag. I love it so much, I’ll have it for life. My least expensive is probably a pleated denim skirt from Savers. It’s perfect, I’ve gotten so much wear out of it.

What is the most meaningful fashion piece you own?

My most meaningful piece is my burgundy Incu Collection jacket. My partner surprised me with it for my birthday maybe four years ago. It’s one of my favourite things I own, another piece for life.

Who or what influences your style?

My biggest inspiration is my friend Molly. We worked throughout lockdown together and she’d come to work every day in the most outlandish pyjamas and looked fierce every single day.

Her style is eclectic, comfortable and has a childlike charm. Seeing her be so comfortable in what was probably the clothes she slept in the night before really inspired me to incorporate comfortable layers, exciting colours and cute graphics [into my wardrobe].

What fashion piece are you saving for right now?

A pair of Grape shoes, I dream about them. I’d take any of them… please.

What are the wardrobe items you wear on repeat?

My bichon frisé jumper. It’s so ridiculous, I wear it pretty much every day. Also these leather Tony Bianco slides. They just go with everything, trackies, denim skirt, pyjamas I’ve worn it all. I’ve worn them so much that the sole is completely trashed and I’ve had to glue it, I literally can’t throw them out.

Who are your favourite local designers?

Hello Sisi is my favourite local designer, everything she makes is gorgeous. I love Suku for comfortable PJs and ‘going grocery shopping’ clothes. Also Après Studio, I love all of their ruched gingham.
