Anime and vintage distressing: Inside the second instalment of Onitsuka Tiger’s ‘Astro Boy’ collaboration
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ONITSUKA TIGER

When an iconic streetwear brand meets a much-loved anime.
Japanese streetwear brand Onitsuka Tiger, a firm favourite in the Fashion Journal office and beyond, has really been delivering on the collaboration front lately. Just last month, it teamed up with French label Patou to create a Parisian-inspired range, featuring the Mexico 66 in a pink and black colourway and a ballerina-esque take on the brand’s much-loved sneaker. Now, in time for gifting season, it’s dropped its second graphic-heavy Astro Boy collection, another collab that just makes sense.
For the uninitiated, Astro Boy is an iconic Japanese anime (it’s widely considered one of the greatest animes of all time), and it tells the story of an android boy with human emotions. Astro Boy’s vibrant colour palette and punchy graphics are right at home in Onitsuka Tiger’s world of streetwear.

To celebrate the second collaboration, the range features fresh graphics depicting Astro Boy switching out his signature red boots for a pair of Tiger boots in Onitsuka’s yellow. There’s a red and grey theme throughout, colours that are characteristic of the anime series.

The genderless collection consists of hoodies, sweatshirts, T-shirts and polo shirts, as well as socks, hats and bags. A standout item is the blue striped button up – the classic cut, oversized fit and cute graphic make it a playful but practical summer go-to.
Many of the pieces have been given a distressed treatment too, lending them an authentic vintage feel. Any fashion lover knows how hard it is to make something brand new have the patina of the preloved, but Onitsuka Tiger has made it look effortless.
And if you’re just after something small, the socks and hats (each emblazoned with Astro Boy graphics of course) make for excellent little gifts for yourself or someone else.
The collaboration will be available in selected Onitsuka Tiger stores in Australia and you can shop it online now.
