WORDS BY MARYEL SOUSA

“I think the way I dress is the one thing that my confidence has never wavered in.”

We know personal style is a journey (I’m looking at you, Tumblr years), so our series Hey, I like Your Style! dives into the fashion psyche of our favourite creatives. We’re talking the good, the bad and the 2007.

While the internet has made our fashion icons feel closer than ever before, even the most effortless of outfits came from a closet with some (well-dressed) skeletons. Clickable product tags, photo archives and lives chronicled in 30-second clips just don’t tell the full story.

For more fashion news, shoots, articles and features, head to our Fashion section.

These are the stories behind the wardrobes, exploring how we develop our personal style. There’s a brilliance behind the way we choose to express ourselves, and at FJ, we know every outfit has a story. For this instalment of Hey, I Like Your Style!, we enter the wardrobe of Melbourne-based content creator and model, Paris Wycherley. Paris’ style is a bit of everything – exciting, eclectic and, above all, effortlessly cool. Read more about her style journey below.

Who are you, and what do you like to wear?

I am a (nearly 30-year-old) New Zealand expat living in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. I run the socials (and am the voice of reason) for local Melbourne brand Monphell and spend the rest of my time usually slumped in my bedroom surrounded by a pile of clothes, trying to think of an outfit.

What has your style evolution looked like? Do you feel like you’ve gained confidence in the way you dress?

I have dabbled in more feminine looks in the past, but I always return to my trusty old baggy pants. I am definitely not ladylike enough for a skirt, and I always feel more myself in a loose-fitting pant and shirt or an old vintage tee.

I think the way I dress is the one thing that my confidence has never wavered in. Sure, I definitely look back at outfits I have worn in the past (even sometimes as recent as the week prior) and cringe, but at the time of wearing it, I know I felt like it was the coolest thing ever.

Take us back to those awkward teenage years. Do you have any fashion regrets?

I prefer to pretend the years between 13 and 20 did not exist, as there were many, many fashion faux pas. I think, in my later years, I started wearing denim One Teaspoon shorts and blazers everywhere (thanks Elle Ferguson for the inspo), but coming out of Circus nightclub at 7am in corporate casual isn’t the best look.

What are the most expensive and least expensive items in your wardrobe?

I recently bought a vintage Loewe briefcase in Japan, so that’s one of my more pricy items, or maybe my vintage Bottega boots. [The] least expensive – maybe these The Row dupe shoes I found in Japan for $20 (or do I confess to you I wear seamless underwear from Temu?).

What is the most meaningful fashion piece you own?

When my boyfriend [and I] started dating, he made me a custom two-piece set, which I still love to this day. I also collect slogan vintage T-shirts that feel special to me as well.

Who or what influences your style?

I think my friends are cool. My sisters, my mum, my boyfriend, a random walking down the street, Pinterest, people on Instagram – everybody and everything! My style influences can change pretty quickly; I might spend a weekend at an Airbnb in the country and decide I need to start wearing overalls and a cowboy hat or see a really well-put-together, chic girl in the city and want to go and throw out all the colours in my wardrobe.

What fashion piece are you saving for right now?

I have my eye on some purple Port Tanger sunglasses, and I am on the hunt for a classic black handbag I can keep forever.

What are the wardrobe items you wear on repeat?

At the moment in Melbourne winter, I am living in my Monphell fleece tracksuit, but basically any matching set. I dream of having an entire wardrobe filled with matching sets for those days when you have decision fatigue and just want to not think of putting together an outfit.

Who are your favourite local designers?

Monphell (of course) and I have been loving Elas-Crochet. She makes the cutest colourful crochet bags and they make me excited for the summer.
