I asked my favourite mid-size content creators how they style a mini skirt

WORDS BY CAT FORSYTH

“In a way, it’s like a type of rebellion against the early-2000s culture I grew up in that idolised tiny bodies. I love showing my body and creating outfits that highlight every part of it.”

Do you ever feel intimidated by a fashion trend because you feel like it doesn’t suit your body? That’s how I feel about mini skirts. I love how they look on absolutely anyone but myself. I’m too scared even to try one on.

The thing is, they’re everywhere at the moment. I think mini skirts are so cute, and I even have some gorgeous ones in my wardrobe. I never reach for them, though. It feels out of the question because I feel anxious wearing them.

As someone who is still learning to love me and my body, wearing a mini skirt seems like no mean feat. Having so much of my body on full display is scary for me (that’s also scary for me to admit, but here we are), and I know that many others out there feel the same.

I truly think that body image issues shouldn’t get in the way of how you dress. But I’m also well aware that’s easier said than done. I’m actively working on trying to accept myself, and a big part of that is saying ‘fuck it’ to the negative thoughts and doing what I want despite my anxieties.

So, I asked my favourite mid- and plus-size friends to style a mini skirt, hoping it might inspire me to do the same. Be warned: the following images are ridiculously hot.

With summer coming up, I love styling mini skirts with corset tops or an oversized button-up with a little crop underneath (and big chunky boots of course). Being a bigger girl wearing mini skirts, it can be scary, especially when they’re low-rise. But honestly, confidence is the best thing you can wear – and paired with a mini skirt, you’re unstoppable.

As a bigger girl growing up, I tried so hard to hide my body. As I went through puberty and started to develop assets (cough cough, titties and an ass, cough), I felt even worse and dressed so I wouldn’t draw attention to myself. Through a lot of growing and learning, I’ve come to develop my own personal style that celebrates the space I take up. I love wearing mini skirts because it makes me feel sexy and confident! But it’s also a reminder of how far I’ve come to be in a place where I feel comfortable in my own skin.

Wearing a mini skirt makes me feel hot and fashionable. In a way, it’s like a type of rebellion against the early-2000s culture I grew up in that idolised tiny bodies. I love showing my body and creating outfits that highlight every part of it. Being able to love me in a mini skirt has been a huge part of my acceptance of my body, as I allow myself to ignore what critics have to say and wear what makes me feel good! There’s no such thing as “dressing for your body type”, and wearing mini skirts and looking pretty good while doing it is just further proof of that!

When I put on a mini skirt, I feel like a badass. My younger self always believed that I had to fit into specific and limited ‘It Girl’ criteria, something a mini skirt represented to me for a long time. To take back this notion and say ‘Fuck you’ to beauty standards empowers me. I style my mini skirt with platform shoes for extra Bratz vibes, a crop top to show off all my curves and my most important accessory: attitude. It doesn’t matter what you wear, confidence will always bring out your inner style.

I’ve always been a mini skirt gal. I feel confident and sexy wearing mini skirts. It’s so important to me when I pick my clothes that I’m choosing outfits I actually want to wear. I love how mini skirts show off my curves. They make me feel deliciously chubby, super femme and beautiful. There are so many ways to style mini skirts but one of my favourite approaches is super simple: wearing a matching or plain top! And using accessories to bring it to life, like a statement pair of earrings, cute bag and fun pair of sunglasses. For shoes, it really depends on the vibe you’re going for. I always love to wear a pair of sneakers (like Nike’s Air Jordan 1), but you could just as easily wear a pair of low heels to elevate the look and make it a bit more dressy.

Because the Y2K trend is making a strong comeback, denim mini skirts are an absolute must-have. During the original Y2K era, there was a lack of diversity in body types and representation, which is why I feel really empowered wearing mini skirts now. Back then, the extent of plus size fashion was limited to barely more than an enormous, flowery shift dress purchased from the same store that your mother would shop at. Style has no size limit. Mini skirts are for everyone, so don’t be shy about flaunting your legs!
