The best coats from local designers to invest in this winter, according to the FJ team

A trench coat for every occasion.

A Southern Hemisphere winter is coming and the fashion girlies are ready to rug up. Whether you’re a puffer jacket, trench coat or leather blazer lover, there is a new (or old) outerwear staple waiting to be worn. And because we are in the generally warmer part of the globe, it’s best to invest in a coat that can take you between all seasons.

Looking for more ways to procrastinate? We’re with you. Come on over to our Fashion section.

Our team are voracious internet trawlers with various degrees of shopping organisation (some use spreadsheets, others choose to make purchases a few wines deep) – but we’re all actively trying to think more consciously before we purchase. And we all love supporting local designers, obviously. After much deliberation, here are the transeasonal coats our team is investing in this season.

Kowtow Cleo Trench Coat

New Zealand brand Kowtow does transeasonal items really well, in my opinion. A lot of its pieces are utilitarian-inspired, functional and durable. This particular trench coat is made from Fairtrade organic cotton ripstop, in a deep but vibrant green hue. The detailing of its buttons that do up to the neck, along with the back vent, add a slightly feminine touch to this staple coat.

From face value, a classic trench coat ticks all my boxes; it’s versatile, comfortable and easy to layer. Yet every time I think I’ve found ‘the one’, I always end up feeling like a Parisian mum. This number from Melbourne label Coreprêt is a contemporary and relaxed take on the French classic. Featuring a cocoon raglan sleeve and a generous centre-back slit, it’s the perfect design to keep you covered year-round. Although currently sold out, you can get in touch with the brand and request a custom one just for you.

Esse Studios Trench in Black

I’ve always admired the ethos of Melbourne label Esse Studios, creating wardrobe staples that are made to last through the trend cycle. My beige trench has become a transeasonal staple in my wardrobe this past year (even in summer – I’m looking at you, Melbourne weather), and I’ve been looking to invest in a black counterpart to pair with my monochromatic wardrobe. This one is relaxed, versatile and oversized, making it everything I’m looking for in my next coat.

Maggie Marilyn Puffer Coat

I’m a big fan of New Zealand label Maggie Marilyn, and I’m also a big fan of oversized puffer coats. Using reclaimed down and regenerated nylon, this coat will keep me toasty on even the most hellishly cold Melbourne mornings. This might seem like a coat for the depths of winter, but when you’re a girlie who feels the cold right down to her bones, a puffer jacket is transeasonal. Added points for the wrap-around collar and invisible zip seam pockets.

Arnsdorf Alessandra Trench in Recycled Vegan Leather

Recently I’ve wanted to dress like Suki Waterhouse’s character in Daisy Jones and the Six, mostly because I’ve never had an original thought. This means lots of black (not hard in my wardrobe), touches of leather and more shimmery fabric than I’m usually comfortable with. My next coat investment needed to fill the brief, while still being a piece I know I’ll wear for years to come. With its recycled vegan leather, oversized lapels and storm-flap detailing, this Arnsdorf coat is the right amount of ’70s-esque drama. Plus, it won’t feel too toasty once it starts warming up.

Après Studio Brown Stripe Trench Coat

I love how transparent and open Après Studio is about its design and manufacturing process. On Instagram, followers got to see the journey of this coat over a few months. I remember seeing the initial sample to how expensive it was to get the pieces through customs! These anecdotes go to show just how much love and hard work go into slow fashion.

The coat itself is gloriously powerful with a touch of fun. Its structured, long-lined shape pairs nicely with the brown tonal stripes and pops of cobalt blue. It definitely veers on the side of a winter coat, but Melbourne loves to pull an early cold season anyway.
