Sleek and subtle.

When I was in high school, (almost 12 years ago, which makes me feel unbearably old) masturbation was a difficult conversation to broach with your friends. There was so much shame around female pleasure that the idea of admitting that you actually enjoyed masturbating was enough to put the fear of god in most 15-year-old girls.

As masturbation was barely discussed, at least not until the last year or two of high school, sex toys were only ever spoken about in a tone that made it clear you would never use one and were totally grossed out by their existence.

From discussions I’ve had as an adult, I now know that many of us were shamefully (and rather hilariously) using an electric toothbrush or back massager as a makeshift vibrator. So thank god, really, that sex toys have had a facelift in recent years. It’s not uncommon now to find recommendations via Instagram posts, articles (we’ve got a bunch of them) and podcasts, or see characters in film and TV using sex toys.

I believe a key factor in sex toys’ ascension to a more mainstream audience is the way brands have refined the appearance of their products. These days they’re impressively sleek and compact, come in pleasing shades of pastel pink and tangerine, and are often shaped in a way that makes their intended use not immediately obvious.

As Fashion Journal contributor Jasmine Wallis wrote in a feature about the rise of aesthetically pleasing sex toys, these days they’re more likely to be “Nestled next to Apple AirPods, Diptyque candles and Sally Rooney books”. So whether you’re just starting out on your sex toy journey, or are a seasoned professional in search of a new addition, here are six vibrators that you’ll actually want to leave on your bedside table.

Billie Palm Vibrator from Normal

Normal’s Billie Palm Vibrator comes in a soothing teal-blue shade and fits neatly in the palm of your hand. Its soft silhouette will sit nicely among your other bedside table possessions, or perhaps it could act as a paperweight. This one’s for you if you’re looking for external stimulation and a vibrator that can be used solo or with a partner.

Melbourne sex toy brand Rosewell really knows how to create an aesthetically pleasing sex toy – a quick scroll of its Instagram feed confirms it’s basically built its brand identity around being bedside table-worthy. Its Bend Essentials vibrator is softly curved and is what I imagine a label like Celine or The Row would design if they were in the pleasure business. In other words, it’s undeniably bedside table worthy.

Female-founded sex toy brand Dame changed the game with its innovative (and very pretty) sex toys. Australian sexual wellness store Flossy stocks a selection of the brand’s offerings, including our favourite – the Aer. It’s possibly one of the most compact, subtle-looking air suction toys I’ve seen, and the light purple shade won’t look out of place atop your bedside table book stack.

Melbourne brand LBDO’s Essensual Vibe in coral is an external vibrator that could easily pass as a small sculpture/bedside table trinket. It’s designed to fit in the palm of your hand and has six vibrations including wave and tease, so you can choose to opt for targeted or broad stimulation.

This compact bullet vibrator from Vacation Vibes is tiny, cute and baby-blue, which means it can take pride of place on your bedside table. It’s made for both internal and external use, too, and comes in at a very affordable $59.95.

I told you Rosewell was good at making aesthetically pleasing sex toys – so good that another of the brand’s toys has made it to this list. Dip is Rosewell’s palm-sized offering. This vibrator is for external use and has a textured underside and curved tip. Available in Stone and Deep Blue, you can feel very relaxed about leaving this toy out on display as, according to the brand, “Dip is often mistaken for an Apple mouse, so feel free to leave it in plain sight”.
