WORDS IZZY WIGHT

“It’s a gentle reminder to be yourself, trust your instincts and shine your own beautiful light.”

In the age of social media and side hustles, it can be hard to find the time to slow down, intentionally. While a holiday to relieve your work burnout is great, it’s becoming clear many of us don’t take the time for meaningful, regular pauses. For Nicky Brownless and her daughters, Ruby and Lucy, ritual, mindfulness and self-care have always been at the forefront.

The Australian trio’s recently-launched project, Bless, is centred around “empowerment” and “positive affirmations”. Bless’ range is purposefully small, featuring five thoughtful products. Both the Cotton Singlet and Silk Head Scarf are inscribed with hidden quotes, as “a gentle reminder that it’s what’s on the inside that matters”. Below, Nicky, Ruby and Lucy speak on Bless’ beginnings.

Tell us about yourselves. How did Bless get started?

We are a mother-daughter team. We had always wanted to have a business together – something creative of our own. Bless started with our love of travel and our passion for wellness… [we were] inspired by all of this along the way.

Bless was born six years ago while travelling on a train from Montauk to New York, the name came first with the rest taking a little longer. The name is an abbreviation of our name, Brownless.

What are you trying to communicate through the project?

Our aim is to help and empower young girls and women with positive affirmations that we have printed on our products, reinforcing that it’s what’s on the inside that counts. [It’s] a gentle reminder to be yourself, trust your instincts and shine your own beautiful light.

Talk us through the product capsule collection. What was the process like in curating these pieces?

We have started with our four products… [we wanted] to keep this small initially. We wanted to create our own cotton singlet but with the quotes and affirmations printed on the inside seam so you always have this close to you while wearing it. The same idea was also important when creating our Silk Head Scarves.

We wanted to have a beautiful silk piece, with our quotes printed around the edges, representing mindfulness. Our Bless Bags and our Muslin Cloth are items we use every day, both products we created out of our love for travel and our daily rituals.

Bless is about sharing some of the personal rituals and affirmations you live by. Can you give us an example of some of these?

If you can start the day… [by giving] yourself some time just for you, you’ll benefit so much. For us, this means a warm lemon water in the morning upon waking, five to 10 minutes of meditation, moving your body and doing whatever you need to fill your cup up for the day.

It’s slowing down more often, checking in with yourself and being present. Having reminders of positive affirmations and quotes around us encourages this, too. After just travelling to India and witnessing their beautiful traditions and rituals, we were inspired to continue ours at home, which is always evolving!

How would you describe Bless to someone who’s never seen it before?

Bless is our way of sharing our story, inspiration and lessons we have picked up and learnt along the way. [It’s] a platform to share our curated products with a purposeful meaning being the focus behind each one. [We’re] encouraging each individual… to be beautiful and to shine your own light.

What’s it like working together as a mother-daughter trio?

It’s amazing. We feel very lucky to do what we do all together. We are constantly encouraging each other to play to our own strengths while always learning and respecting each other. We are excited about our future and how that will unfold.

What’s next for Bless?

We recently returned from India and have sourced fabrics and visited local manufacturers over there for our next range, which was an amazing experience. We have lots of plans and exciting things in the pipeline for the rest of the year and are also open to collaborating with like-minded people. We hope to continue to be inspired along our journey, along our travels and in our everyday lives.
