A blogger’s guide to getting festival ready

All that glitters.

In a few short weeks, many of us will pack our bags and head north for Splendour in the Grass. And while we’re first and foremost at the event to catch the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Lorde, Vampire Weekend and more, we’re always partial to checking out the festival fashion.

As per usual, we’re expecting to see a whole lot of colour, glitter and lace around North Byron Parklands. To affirm your fashion choices over the weekend of July 20, we chatted to travel blogger and face of Colette by Colette Hayman’s festival campaign Brooke Styles about her sartorial picks for the festival.

Splendour in the Grass is nearing. Talk us through the kind of items we’ll find in your festival suitcase.

This year is going to be a big one. The fashion at Splendour is improving and outdoing itself every year and I can’t wait to see what is going to come this year.

I’m definitely overloading with packing, because enough is never too much. For Splendour, you need to pack for every situation. Once you’re in the grounds it’s hard to have access to anything you may have forgotten.

If you’ve got limited luggage space, what are the key pieces you’d bring along?

  • Baby wipes
If you are a first-timer to Splendour or camping, there’s a high chance you won’t be showering. Sorry! Prepare yourself with a few packs of baby wipes, you’ll be kicking yourself if you forget.
  •  A used pair of knee-high ROC boots
Make sure you have worn-in your shoes before hitting any festival to save your little feet from getting blisters. After three full days of running around, you’ll be needing a pack of band-aids unless you prepare.
  • Glitter!
Lots of it! No matter how basic or overdone your look may be, glitter is the one thing to complete it. Cover yourself or put a little sparkle on your cheeks to elevate your look.
  • A tassel shoulder bag
I am loving the tassel bags Colette by Colette Hayman has dropped in its festival collection.
  • A hair scarf
Hair scarves are so in this season and such a cute way to completely change a look.

What about accessories? What will we be seeing a lot of this season?

This season there will definitely be a mix of vintage and edgy fashion. For the vintage lovers, pick hair scarves, fine jewellery and minimalist bags. If you want to go a little bolder, think chain bras, cat-eye sunnies, overloaded jewellery and chunky boots.

What do you keep in mind when purchasing accessories for a festival?

Remember that you are at a festival for 10+ hours per day. Look for items that won’t catch on your clothing, cause discomfort or fall out easily.

Any tips for packing jewellery in your suitcase that won’t leave everything tangled?

You can come across some super cute jewellery travel bags in Colette. Or a DIY option is to use old film canisters or Monday to Friday medication containers.

And in terms of beauty, how will you be ensuring your look stays in place all day and through the night?

I start off my beauty routine with a good water-based primer and tinted moisturiser. I use the Nars tinted moisturiser and it has amazing coverage but is super light, so you don’t feel cakey throughout the day. Then set with All Nighter setting spray by Urban Decay.

Sneaky tip. If applying glitter, use Vaseline to help stick.

What item can you not live without at a festival?

A portable charger! Nothing worse than a flat battery when you want to Snapchat your fave band.

Anything else we should know?

Splendour in The Grass has a good reputation for having mixed weather. Some years it rains some years it’s so hot you melt. But no matter the weather throughout the day, it’s freezing at night so make sure you pack something warm to change into!
