Book review: The Nakano Thrift Shop

An agreeable Sunday night read.

Gentle, pleasant and charming are all words that feel appropriate when describing The Nakano Thrift Shop.

Translated from Hiromi Kawakami’s original Japanese text, the story follows Hitomi, a young girl who takes a low-paying job at the local thrift shop.

As you may have guessed, it’s hardly a page turner. Yet I found myself developing a strong fondness for each of the characters, in their own quirky, imperfect kind of way.

Much like Hiromi herself, the story is understated and slightly awkward, but has a highly endearing quality.

An agreeable Sunday night read.
