Following growing concern over their environmental impact, Coca-Cola Amatil has announced it’s phasing out plastic drinking straws and stirrers in Australia.

“We’ve heard the community message loud and clear – that unnecessary packaging is unacceptable, and we all need to work together to reduce the amount entering litter streams, the environment and the oceans,” said group managing director, Alison Watkins, in a statement.

Instead, the brand will offer fully-recyclable and biodegradable paper straws, sourced from BioPack and Austraw, to its stockists. They’ll be made available to around 115,000 businesses Australia-wide in February, with the brand running down its existing plastic stocks over the next two months.

It’s the next step in Coca-Cola Amatil’s attempts to ensure 100 per cent of Australian packaging is recyclable by 2025.
