7 Australian fashion people share their favourite candles

Let’s get lit.

It seems the internet has found a new enemy: the big light. Personally, I’m here for it. I’ve been a big light hater since day one. Unless you’ve got some kind of diffused rice paper lantern situation, the big light (the main overhead light in a room) will always be harsh and garish, making your space feel like a hospital and illuminating every detail in a deeply unflattering way.

On the opposite end of the spectrum from the horrible big light, we have candles. A few sparkly little wonders could make even a garage seem charming. Warm, cozy and sweet-scented, they add a touch of romance and old-world charm wherever they sit.

Whether you’re putting together a dinner party centrepiece, cleaning the house on a Sunday afternoon or just getting the mood right, a candle is the perfect cherry on top. In need of some new candles to try, we asked a few of our favourite fashion people for their top choices.

A post shared by Trudon (@trudon)

True to my indecisive nature, I have two favourites – one for everyday use and the other a little more bougie. I was given the Trudon candle in Ernesto as a birthday gift years ago. It comes in a dark green glass, with a gold embossed Trudon coat of arms… and it’s made in France. J’adore! I love its intoxicating scent of aged leather and smoky tobacco – so much so that I barely burn it because I never want it to run out!

The other is the H&M Home candle in Rich Mahogany. For an inexpensive candle, the scent is rich and sophisticated, and surprisingly (unlike other similarly priced candles) envelopes my space with its fragrance. So, naturally, I have one in every room of the house.

My favourite candle would have to be Jasmin from Diptyque! I usually don’t have much luck with candles as I’m quite sensitive to scents and a lot of them give me migraines but Diptyque candles just work for me. Jasmin is a great soft, soothing floral scent that isn’t too heavy and really helps me relax after a long day!

A post shared by BYREDO (@officialbyredo)

I’ve repurchased my beloved Byredo Bibliotheque candle around three times now after first receiving it as a gift for my 23rd birthday. Despite the hefty price point, I think it’s a totally justifiable and worthwhile investment. First and foremost, it burns super evenly and seems to last forever. The scent is perfect for any living room or bedroom. It’s reminiscent of the woody aroma of a library, featuring notes of patchouli, plum, leather accord and vanilla.

My favourite candle is the Price’s Housekeeper Scented Candle. It’s super affordable, simple and neutral. I’m pretty big on incense so if I’m reaching for a candle it’s after I’ve cleaned my space. This scent to me is the smell of a clean space – the final step in resetting for the week. It’s nothing fancy but it does the job and that’s what I love about it.

This Le Rouge Mini Scented Candle from Maison Balzac is a new favourite. In the mornings, it’s my zen scent during meditation. After a few months of rubbish sleep, I am trying to get better at sleep routines! To (try) and clock off around 8 pm, I go into bed and burn the candle at night while reading before bed. Honestly, it’s become my daily ritual MVP.

There’s this one candle I smelled at a perfumery a year ago and I simply cannot get it out of my mind: the Abd El Kader Candle by Trudon. It smells like fresh mint tea in a Moroccan market and has just the right amount of sweetness and warm spice. Sadly, I haven’t got my hands on one just yet (I’m waiting for a special occasion) so for now, my top picks are the Nonna’s Grocer fruit and vegetable candles – delicious.
