Instagram steps up, introduces mental health support feature

Finally.

We’ll be the first to admit we haven’t loved every Instagram update, but here’s one we can really get on board with.

The social media giant is introducing a new mental health support feature, which will allow users to offer support to anyone they perceive to be in need.

Say a friend of yours posts an image that is out of character or suggests they’re going through a rough time. You can anonymously report the image to Instagram, which will then said this message to the user:

“Someone saw one of your posts and thinks you might be going through a difficult time. If you need support, we’d like to help.”

The app then suggests various mental health support services and encourages them to make contact.

Considering recent studies have found your Instagram profile can reveal predictive markers of depression, it’s high time support services were encouraged on the app.

Sometimes just knowing someone else cares can go a long way.
