Photographs for Peace: Australian photographers have donated their work to raise funds for emergency efforts in Gaza

WORDS BY FASHION JOURNAL

Australian creatives are coming together.

As the violence perpetrated against civilians in Gaza continues, news channels and social media feeds have been flooded with quotes, videos and images depicting unimaginable human suffering. With no clear end in sight, it’s crucial that where we can, we educate ourselves and others, raising awareness for those Palestinian civilians enduring an ongoing humanitarian crisis. This can take many forms, like showing up to attend protests, sharing information or donating to charities aiding Palestinian people, either directly or through a fundraiser appeal.

Launching today, Photographs for Peace is a fundraiser initiative launched by the Australian artist collective, Agender. Over 30 female photographers are coming together to raise money for the emergency efforts of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and Save the Children. Until February 2, you’ll be able to purchase donated works from prominent and emerging Australian photographers, including names like Stephanie Simcox, Yasmin Suteja, Ming Nomchong, Stephanie Cammarano and Sim Kaur, to name a few.

The collection on offer will include limited-edition and never-before-seen works, as well as photographs featured in The Museum of Contemporary Art. All archival-quality prints will be priced at $70 plus shipping, making this the ideal accessible entry for a first-time art buyer. Every dollar above basic printing costs and payment processing fees will go directly to the charities.

Both charities are calling for an enduring ceasefire. Through its Gaza Emergency Appeal, Save the Children is currently responding through partners, distributing water and hygiene products and preparing food parcels for families. Once able to provide further support, its Gaza teams will begin setting up safe spaces, providing mental health support, deploying emergency medical care, providing cash transfers and setting up temporary learning centres.

Médecins Sans Frontières works out of three clinics in Gaza, providing medical care to burn victims and trauma patients. The charity also runs mental health programs, offering support to victims of political violence. Beyond fundraising, Photographs for Peace is calling for solidarity and encouraging a shared sense of responsibility.

“MSF is so grateful for the generosity shown by this collective of Australian photographers,” says Teneale Cameron, Senior Fundraising Manager at Médecins Sans Frontières Australia. “This comes at a time where the medical humanitarian situation in Gaza is beyond catastrophic. We continue to call for an immediate ceasefire to prevent further civilian deaths and to allow aid workers unrestricted access to provide lifesaving medical care to the two million Gazans who desperately need it today.”
