Courtney Barnett: Tell Me How You Really Feel

Words by Bianca O’Neill

A broken heart put to good use.

From the doomy opening strains of Tell Me How You Really Feel, you just know this is going to be an excellent album.

Courtney Barnett captured the audience’s attention with the parochial ‘Depreston’, but as these things often go, the popular single hardly represented the depth of her massive talent.

Well, it’s certainly on show here – from the stomping, punky ‘I’m Not Your Mother, I’m Not Your Bitch’ to the witty, bluesy ‘Help Yourself’ (which deliciously descends into a juicy shred session, showing off her incredible guitar skills).

“Take your broken heart,” she says on ‘Hopefulessness’, “and turn it into art.” Thankfully for us, Barnett’s broken heart has delivered us this cracker of an album.
