Julia Jacklin: Crushing
Words by GLORIA BRANCATISANO
An elegantly devastating record.
On her second album Crushing, Julia Jacklin has stripped herself bare.
Through the rollercoaster of a break up, and the healing thereafter, she tells a tale that is starkly vulnerable and openly intimate – as if we’re on this journey of heartache and recovery with her.
Even in the album’s most fragile moments, when Jacklin’s voice trembles, there’s still a clear strength and power. From the pulsing beat and simple, dark guitar line that leads opener ‘Body’, to the bright, sparkling guitars of ‘Pressure To Party’, the melodies might contrast, but the feeling remains.
Moving through unwanted advice, to the loneliness of a rebound and finally, the relief of knowing you will move on, Jacklin lays her emotions on the table.
On album number two, Julia Jacklin has crafted an elegantly devastating record that stands strong in its beauty, strength and openness.
