M3LL155X: FKA twigs

Heading into darker, more abstract territory.

M3LL155X isn’t exactly an easy listen.  The EP finds FKA twigs stripping back the sound that made last year’s LP1 so successful. It’s down to a bare minimum and heading into darker, more abstract territory.

The five tracks are all covered in brittle, skittering beats that seems to change pattern with every verse. A sense of menace creeps underneath each song through deep bass rumbles that clash with twigs’ familiar airy delivery. It can be a bit of a daunting ride, especially when coupled with the 18-minute movie which depicts twigs giving birth to a rainbow-coloured dance troupe.

Although initially appearing impenetrable, over a few listens the melodies start to reveal themselves. There’s a lot of intricate detail to the production here and M3LL155X shows that twigs isn’t about to rest on her laurels anytime soon.
