Pucker up.

Lip blush tattoo sounds more like an Evanescence song than an actual procedure offered in beauty salons. But this permanent makeup treatment has been gaining more traction in recent times, heralded for its ability to give people the appearance of fuller and more pigmented lips.

Lipstick comes with a slew of pain points – it smudges, can feel drying and requires constant touch-ups. Lip blush aims to remedy this. With just a few appointments, clients leave with a new wash of colour on their luscious lips, one that lasts anywhere between 12 and 16 months.

To learn more about lip blush tattoos, we asked Perth-based cosmetic tattoo technician and owner of VV Allure Zoe Toovey to share more details about the procedure.

So, what even is lip blush?

Lip blush is a semi-permanent makeup procedure, where advanced pigments are deposited into the dermis layer of the skin with very fine needles. Lip blush can be used to reshape, cover scars, enhance natural lip colour, create plumper-looking lips and reconstruct the areola complex.

Can you please walk us through an appointment?

Every appointment is adjusted to each client. Appointments [are] normally a quick 10-minute consultation to see what my client is wanting to achieve with their lips [in terms of] colour [and] shape. Appointments range from two-to-three hours.

On a technical level, lip blush is created with a fine needle and tattoo machine. The needle implements cosmetic tattoo pigment into the skin to create small pixelation. The small pixelation creates… colour in the lips.

Is there any pain or danger associated with this?

There is minimal pain associated with this. Depending on which technician you go to, numbing will be used. Not recommended [for] this procedure are pregnant clients, [people who are] breastfeeding [or on] blood thinners, and women undergoing radiation or chemotherapy.

Who commonly gets this done?

Common clients who come and get lip blush are usually between 18 and 40 years of age. Most popularly [between] 20 and 30 years of age. Lip blush is especially good for women who have had lip filler and if their lips have gone slightly pale.

What is the healing period like?

Healing is about five-to-six days long. Lips will initially be bright and full of colour. Over the next few days, the colour will fade and go slightly flaky as the skin ‘sheds’ the pigment. After this, the pigment will slowly fade up to 60 per cent before a four-week touch-up is due.

The four-week touch-up is a ‘perfection’ visit to perfect the lip blush look and reimplement pigment into the skin so the lip blush will last 12-to-16 months. The pigment will only fade 40 per cent after the perfection visit.

Can you wear lipsticks and other lip products with your lip blush tattoo? How does it affect colouring?

You can absolutely wear lipstick or any type of gloss. It will not affect the lipstick colour or the lip blushing.
