Cult-favourite Filipino beauty brand Sunnies Face just landed in Australia, here are our honest thoughts

WORDS BY FASHION JOURNAL

“High-quality products with budget-friendly price tags.”

In the world of beauty, Australia is often last to receive hotly-anticipated launches from international brands (ahem, Glossier). So when a new launch arrives on our shores, it’s especially exciting – even more so if you’re beauty-obsessed, like most members of the Fashion Journal team.

We like nosy people. Don’t be shy, head to our Beauty section for more.

Filipino-born beauty brand Sunnies Face is one of the latest to land in Australia. Known for its effortless multi-use products and luxe formulations (like the award-winning Fluffmate Lipstick), the brand makes high-quality products with budget-friendly price tags. The Fashion Journal team was lucky enough to try out some Sunnies Face products for ourselves – read on to hear our honest first impressions.

I tried out the Skin So Good The Multistick, which is described as a ‘skin-enhancing complexion multistick’. Available in 16 flexible shades, it’s supposed to be a versatile product that can be used as a foundation, concealer, highlighter or contour. We were sent the shade Olive, which works as a contour shade for my skin.

The product is easy to apply and possibly the creamiest, easy to blend contour I’ve used in years. Granted I’ve been using the same mostly-dried contour stick for three years, so my opinion may be somewhat skewed. I would love to get my hands on a shade that better matches my concealers to test the staying power and true versatility of the product.

I’m always stupidly excited when a new beauty brand lands on our shores, particularly when it has cute packaging and branding. Filipino beauty brand Sunnies Face more than delivered on this front. The Airblush in shade Cherub immediately caught my eye; it’s a creamy blush in a flattering peachy-orange shade. The texture is somewhat reminiscent of Maybelline’s Dream Matte Blush (IYKYK) and it’s not too pigmented, so it’s super buildable.

I also tried Lip Dip in Femmebot, a mauve pink shade. The formula is – and I can’t emphasise this enough – brilliant. It glides on and is matte but still feels creamy and hydrating. I’m not a big lip colour girlie, so I liked that it was buildable and blendable. And if you want just a light wash of colour, you can easily buff it out with your fingers.

Post my Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow era, I’ve struggled to find a product that helps tame and shape my brows – minus the ultra-carved-out blocky look. Sunnie Face’s Lifebrow Skinny Pencil in the shade Warm Brown gives a natural, hair-like finish, and is a lifesaver when I’m trying to fill out those sparse spots. I just filled in my brows, fluffed them out with a spoolie and added a layer of brow glue for extra staying power.

I also tried the brand’s award-winning Fluffmate Lipstick in the shade Plush, a soft terracotta pink. Despite the turtleneck and leather jacket combo in this picture, it is actually summer (I live in Melbourne after all) and I’m looking for a lipstick that will hold up on balmy days. This feels weightless but dries matte, and not in a lip-pilling, cakey-finish kind of way. It’s more mauve than it looks online, and a beautiful shade to swipe on a relatively naked face.

With its cool branding and fun imagery, I was so excited to try out Sunnies Face now that it’s available in Australia. I tried its Lip Dip in shade Peachy Kinda, the lightest offering out of the 10 hues. I’m someone who opts for a slightly darker shade – Sunnies Face’s Terracotta Rose or Brick Rose would be what I’d usually gravitate to – but found its light orangey colour a good pick for summer.

It’s described as a “whipped matte lip cream”. I was initially sold on the whipped lip cream factor, but not so much on the matte detail. As a survivor of the 2016 Instagram face, I shrink away from a strong matte lip. This lip cream glided on so smoothly, like unbelievably so. On the lips, it was extremely comfortable to wear. The texture is reminiscent of Mac’s Powder Kiss Lipstick and Violette_FR’s Bisou Balm.
