UNIQLO’s got a new artistic director
YES.
Well kids, this news has got us reeling.
UNIQLO has announced Christophe Lemaire will be taking the reins as its new artistic director.
The ex-Hermès creative director will head up a new UNIQLO research and development centre in Paris and launch new a line. UNIQLO U will consist of “elevated basics.”
Lemaire told BoF: “Our ambition is to fill the gap between what’s fashion and what’s ‘normal’. I know the word ‘normcore’ is overused, but there’s something about normality I find very interesting — how do you make it super normal but refined and cool and desirable?”
Lemaire is no stranger to the Japanese retailer. He’s already designed two previous sold-out collections for UNIQLO, which consisted of simple knits, smock dresses and wide-leg pants.
We won’t have to wait long to see Lemaire’s designs either. UNIQLO U is set to launch at Paris Couture week in July.
