Exposed.

As superficial as it may be, a follower count is where the money is. Influencers are smart to know that.

We all know it’s possible to purchase fake followers in the hopes of elevating a social media profile. And with the removal of likes, it’s making it harder and harder to determine who has bought followers and who has genuine reach and influence.

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that Bachelor contestants and D-grade celebrities pull the wool over our eyes with these bots and we expect it. But it turns out it’s not just them.

After high profile celebrities like Ellen DeGeneres and Katy Perry were caught out with a fake following of over 50 per cent, digital marketing agency Pilot Fish Media looked into some of the beauty and fashion brands with the highest profiles.

Trusted favourites like Too Faced, Anastasia Beverly Hills, and M.A.C all made the list of the top ten beauty brands with the highest fake following, as did the Kardashian enterprises of KKW Beauty and Kylie Cosmetics.

According to the research, high fashion brands are not opposed to the practice either. Prada, Dolce & Gabbana and Louis Vuitton also topped the list for fashion brands. With most racking up over 40 per cent of fakes, it begs questions around feelings of authenticity in the digital age, and the value we place on likes and clicks. Would these brands still be as successful without the use of bot followers?
