Walking murals.

Melbourne-based artist Minna Leunig has collaborated with Brunswick label Kuwaii to create a print for its Terra Incognita SS19/20 campaign.

The print follows the earthy aesthetic that we’ve seen in Leunig’s existing work, and the artist uses bold colours and shapes to evoke the Australian landscape.

Having grown up in rural Victoria and traversed Australia from Cape York to the Strathbogie Ranges, Leunig pays homage to the plants and animals she has encountered along the way.

It’s a perfect fit for slow-fashion label Kuwaii. It’s also based in Melbourne and every garment is crafted within 15km of the label’s Brunswick studio. An alternative to mass-produced fast fashion, the Kuwaii philosophy is to create pieces that will last for years and be cherished.

The hero piece of the collaboration is called ‘Walking Murals’. It features an easy, oversized shape with minimal pockets and detailing, intended to let Leunig’s print shine through.

For all of us who spent childhood summers camping in the bush or by the beach, the lizards, koalas and other flora and fauna in the print stir up a nostalgic familiarity with the Australian bush.

The collection is now available online and in Kuwaii’s Fitzroy, Brunswick and Cathedral Arcade stores.
