WORDS BY IZZY WIGHT

“Fashion is a true form of art and expression, so I’m always playing with that.”

We know personal style is a journey (I’m looking at you, Tumblr years), so we’ve introduced a new series Hey, I Like Your Style!, diving into the fashion psyche of our favourite creatives. We’re talking the good, the bad and the 2007.

While the internet has made our fashion icons feel closer than ever before, even the most effortless of outfits came from a closet with some (well-dressed) skeletons. Clickable product tags, photo archives and lives chronicled in 30-second clips just don’t tell the full story.

For more fashion news, shoots, articles and features, head to our Fashion section.

These are the stories behind the wardrobes, exploring how we develop our own personal style. There’s a brilliance behind the way we choose to express ourselves and at FJ, we know every outfit has a story.

This week, we’re delving into the personal style of Sydney-based multidisciplinary artist, Mungmung. As a musician and the designer behind the fashion label Yellowgirl, Mungmung’s wardrobe is an ever-changing rotation of statement pieces (like this beret and voluminous jacket combo) and thoughtful basics, always with a maximalist twist. Following the release of their latest single, ‘Prince Charming’, Mungmung speaks about their journey with fashion and self-expression below.

Who are you and what do you like to wear?

I’m Mungmung, lover of all things in the creative realm, especially music, fashion, design and art. I rock whatever I’m in the mood for! Fashion is a true form of art and expression, so I’m always playing with that.

What has your style evolution looked like? Do you feel like you’ve gained confidence in the way you dress?

I feel as though fashion and style are ever-evolving. My style is a combination of what I naturally have always liked alongside ideas informed by influences around me, be it environment, trends, classic collections or media. I came to be more certain of my own style over time.

I can definitely confidently put together an outfit better now than I did in say, high school – and I can’t wait to see how I re-interpret my style again in the future. Maybe it’s only natural that as I’ve grown as a person, I’ve been able to unabashedly be myself and become more expressive through fashion over time. We out here giving levelled-up BBE!

Personal style is a journey. Have you ever felt like you needed to fit into a particular fashion box?

Not at all! I love to experiment and see how I can put my own twist on looks… I am grabbing from a whole bunch of different boxes, rather than just being stuck in any particular one. What’s the fun in not experimenting with it?!

Take us back to those awkward teenage years. Do you have any fashion regrets?

Ahh, dear… I try not to see anything as a fashion mishap or have any regrets per se, as I would not have developed my own fashion tastes without the first initial steps… I see it all as baby steps towards me now strutting in the most fab chunky-soled heels of fashion confidence heaven.

What are the most expensive and least expensive items in your wardrobe?

I do always try my best to take care of everything in my wardrobe, regardless of the price tag… it’s the inner designer in me being like, ‘Love all your clothes! Read the care instructions to prevent colour running, pilling, etc’.

I’m really big on that! It’s all priceless to me! I do have a mix of just the general basics that I can build upon as well as more unique, boujee items to really add that special element.

What is the most meaningful fashion piece you own?

Anything I’ve designed and/or made under Yellowgirl, as well as handcrafted pieces by my wonderful designer friends or family members. For example, my latest collection is inspired by my upcoming album… a pink qipao made by my grandaunt, delicate organza rose gloves by my dearest John Azzi and more. Every one of these pieces has sentimental value.

What’s in your cart at the moment?

I’m currently looking at getting some cute ass beads so I can get into more crafting hobbies, but also further customise some of my current accessories and clothes with these cute accents. Possibly also looking at adding to the bag family with some mini bags constructed with dope fabrication.

What fashion piece are you saving for right now?

At the moment I’m good with what I have in my wardrobe. I’ve just been re-hashing and freshening up my current goodies with revamped styling. I’d probably peep at accessories I can layer with or better yet, save up to gather materials for the next Yellowgirl collection.

I don’t know if you’re getting the vibe but I do feel like I’m coming across as a hardcore grandma, finding joy in fabric shopping, crafting and making my own little tiddly bits! I just love that shit, man!

What are the wardrobe items you wear on repeat?

I try to challenge myself by going through my wardrobe but doing something different with each piece as much as possible each time. I do find that lately I am going back to either topping off a look with corsets, layered belts, a fluffy hat or a statement sock.

Who are your favourite local designers?

John Azzi, Clair Parker, Charlotte Rose, Atelier Harlem, Caroline Reznik, Maroske Peech, Daisy, Ramp Tramp Tramp Stamp and so much more that are escaping my brain at the moment. There are so many inspiring designers and creatives who continually amaze me with how much they push the boundaries with their work. It’s absolutely admirable. I live to be in the same space as them!

You can keep up with Mungmung here.
