15 of the best festival fashion moments from Pitch Music & Arts over the years, according to the FJ editors
Where sportswear and Y2K styling reigns supreme.
When it comes to festival dressing, the best looks are born from the events with a strong sense of community. The outfits are most impressive when true personal style shines through; when the festival grounds become a visual celebration of different subcultures and trend movements coming together.
At a multi-day event like Pitch Music and Arts, community is key. Coming from personal experience, I can say by the end of the four days, it’s natural to borrow style cues (and sometimes actual clothing) from camping neighbours and new festival friends. A true convergence of music and art, it’s an event that encourages unbridled self-expression.

Lucky for us, Pitch’s seventh edition is just around the corner (March 8 to 12, mark your calendars). To mark the occasion, the Fashion Journal team took a trip down memory lane. Below, we bring you some of the best looks from the past six years of Pitch, broken down into the key trends that have stood the sartorial test of time. Sportswear
When your itinerary looks like days of walking around the Grampian plains, dancing and potential fist-pumping, practicality is everything. There’s a reason sportswear is an ever-present festival trend – it just makes sense. Take cues from previous attendees and play with matching sets, fun accessories and contrasting colours (bonus points if you coordinate with a mate). It’s also a wardrobe choice that’s super weather-adaptable and relies heavily on breathable, movement-friendly materials, making it ideal for hours of dancing.

All dressed up
Most op shops offer racks of stuffy suit jackets, starched button-ups and worn-once formal dresses. Instead of skipping past, follow the lead of Pitch attendees and repurpose gloves, blazers and tailored pants for your festival wardrobe. You can play with contrast (pair a bikini top with a full-length formal skirt, for example) or lean into the look with vintage accessories to match.

Boho forever
There is a reason why after all these years, we still gravitate towards fringe and crochet when it’s festival time. A boho look is a nod to the beginnings of music festivals, emblematic of all that is fun, wild and free. It’s also a trend that lends itself to heavy accessorising, which is always fun. With these pictures for inspiration, you can play with texture – crystals, chainmail, leather and bleached denim, preferably all at once.

Y2K
While Pitch-goers have always favoured diamante details, low-rise pants and cropped singlets, Y2K has really exploded over the last few years. It’s colourful, playful and relatively easy to replicate with pieces you already have in your wardrobe (just look for baby tees and bikini tops). Our advice? Pick an early 2000s icon and go from there. Here you can see style cues taken from Paris Hilton, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and Freaky Friday-era Lindsay Lohan.
