I asked a clairvoyant how to remove bad energy from pre-loved clothing

“When we purchase something that was preowned, we are taking on the energy of the person who previously owned it.”

If you’re a religious buyer of secondhand clothing, you might understand what I mean when I say that some pieces just have a bad feeling about them. Aesthetically they may look great, and perhaps you purchased them for a tidy sum, but every time you go to wear them something feels off.

Maybe you just don’t like the item as much as you initially thought but have you ever considered that you might own an item with a slightly evil, possibly nefarious, history?

It’s not outside the realm of possibility that a conniving criminal, wicked politician or washed-up pop star once wore what’s now sitting in your closet. With this in mind, I reached out to Danya Gamliel, a fifth-generation clairvoyant, for her tips on removing bad energy from your preloved pieces.

Can you tell us a little about you and how you discovered your talents?

I am a fifth-generation clairvoyant (mother’s side) and have had these skills nurtured within me from a very young age. My grandmother gifted me my first deck of traditional playing cards when I was five years old and encouraged me to lean into my talents and develop my skills from then on!

What does ‘energy healing/cleansing’ mean?

We are all energy, we store energy and we communicate with our energy before we communicate verbally or even with our bodies! It is very important that we maintain ‘energy hygiene’ and intentionally cleanse or remove anything that is stagnant or doesn’t serve us. When we carry energy that’s dense or not ours (perhaps we live or work with people who have a negative outlook and often off-load their views on us) we can find ourselves feeling lethargic, uninspired, demotivated and at times feeling down.

When we conduct an energy healing or cleansing, we consciously remove all that doesn’t serve us and in turn, feel lighter [and] happier [and] we recognise opportunities better and are able to make decisions with more courage and clarity.

How can ‘bad energy’ – particularly in the context of pre-loved fashion – affect our lives?

When we purchase something that was preowned, we are taking on the energy of the person who previously owned it. Even if that person has wonderful intentions and shares the same values as you, you are still taking on their energetic heaviness if they faced hardship or difficulty. Therefore, it is important to cleanse the energy from the item so that you can enjoy its use without the interference of any old energy!

Can you explain the process of energy cleansing pre-loved fashion?

Energy can be cleansed from items through a variety of different methods depending on the purpose and material of that item. For jewellery, [you can do this by] placing the items in a bowl of salt (please ensure that the item will not be eroded by the salt). For clothing, soak the item in warm water (if this is appropriate for the fabric) with chamomile tea – a couple of hours is enough. Then place the item into a washing machine or hand wash.

For clothing that can’t be washed (i.e. leather items) take a box or something that you can place the item into; sprinkle the bottom of the box with salt and place tissues in a layer. Then you can put the item onto the tissue, place more tissue over the item and more salt on that layer of tissue (so that the salt doesn’t touch the item in case it can erode the material). Leave it for three days, discard the tissue and salt and repeat with fresh tissues and salt for another three days. For shoes, leave them outside during a full moon for two nights.

Are there any other ways we can bring better energy to our wardrobes?

An energy cleanse of the wardrobe can be done monthly with the full moon. Place bowls in the corner of your wardrobe with three tablespoons of salt (I personally use pink Himalayan salt, table salt is fine too) and keep the salt in the bowls for three days – discard the salt at the end of the three days by throwing it down the sink (where it will dissolve without harm to the environment).
