Baring all.
I’ve been hesitant to dip my toe in the world of sheer clothing. From afar, I’ve admired countless red carpet looks (a favourite being that Julia Fox Vanity Fair dress), while closer to home, I’ve started noticing some of my favourite local labels releasing sheer dresses, skirts and tops.
Recently, I bit the bullet and wore a white dress to a work event that was sheer from the waist down. Although I initially felt hyper-self-aware, I eventually loosened up, forgetting that the world could see my underwear. It felt exciting, freeing and event a little bit sexy.

Admittedly, I played it rather safe for my first time but I think that’s part of the appeal with sheer clothing – you can be as daring or conservative as you want. Depending on the amount of transparency you feel comfortable with, pieces can be layered or you can opt to bare it all.
For some styling inspiration, I reached out to some of my favourite fashion boutiques to see how they were styling sheer styles from different Australian labels.
Emma, founder of Sister Studios
“I always style my sheers with big high undies and a little Base-range bra! For this, I’m wearing the Sister Studios Clare Silk Polka Dot. I also like to pair the dress down with some cherry red cowboy boots and a coat.”
Flyn, Mutual Muse Northcote Store Manager
“I’m wearing a white, sheer lace skirt from Oats the Label. I’ve layered it over some Issey Miyake Pleats Please shorts and paired it with a simple, slouchy T-shirt by a lovely New Zealand brand Remain.
I’ve also been loving wearing these knee-high sheer socks. They’re such a chic way to elevate an outfit with a sheer piece.”
Zara, retail assistant of Silk Laundry Armadale
“I’m wearing our Organza A-line dress in beige, layered over our Bias Cut Silk Pants in Hogwash. I’ve been loving layering sheer items at the moment, especially if it means incorporating a dress-over-pants look.”
