A week in work outfits with FJ interns Lily, Ruby and Amelia

A lesson in winter layering.
It’s never easy trying to come up with new outfit combinations for the working week. Instead of having a set uniform, an ever-changing schedule means every morning requires a set of questions. Am I running around, or just sitting at my desk? Do I need to dress specifically for a project? And what am I meant to do when my favourite pants are in the wash?
This week, Fashion Journal interns Ruby, Lily and Amelia take us through a week in work outfits. Since stepping foot in the office a month ago, our current cohort has been turning out winter looks that have FJ’s own editors taking notes.

With only two days in the office each week, they say getting dressed for work feels equal parts exciting and overwhelming. “It’s easy to get swept up in the ‘office siren’ of it all,” says Ruby. “There are so many ways to get it wrong,” Amelia adds.
So far, we’ve only seen them getting it right. From op shop coats and vintage denim, to freaky footwear and creative layering, here’s how the FJ interns dress for the office without losing their sense of self.

Now that it’s officially winter, my only goal is to dress as warmly as possible. I layered Uniqlo thermals under a cashmere crew neck, then added my mum’s old Uniqlo bomber for good measure. To bring in some colour and pattern, I wore my Peachy Den polka dot scarf. My jeans are old APC, originally my dad’s from the ’90s. They were raw denim but he’s done the hard work wearing them in. I finished with Puma Speedcats for comfort.

Winter is all about layering, especially skirts over pants. I have quite the collection of thrifted skirts and, despite Melbourne’s cold and dreary weather, I refuse to stop wearing them. This outfit is almost entirely op-shopped, aside from my Deiji Studios linen bomber, which I scored at a sample sale after eyeing it for ages. I love every detail: the ties, double collar and ruching. On my feet are spiky Puma ballet flats, the perfect mix of freaky, feminine and supportive.

A quote I live by, from stylist Mac Rose, is: “If the outfit isn’t interesting by colour, it has to be interesting by shape”. As someone with quite a minimalist style, I’m often reluctant to wear colour, so I’ve been focusing more on shape and layering. Today I wore my new Karlaidlaw mini dress over baggy Ripcurl jeans. I’ve paired it with Tabi ballet flats and a vintage black tassel python-skin bag – both everyday staples for me.

I found it hard to get dressed this morning. When my tracksuit pants are metres away, seducing me with their soft, fluffy material, I really value classy but comfortable pieces. These Deiji Studios pants are a year-round staple: easy to move in, really cute and elevated by the side pleats and strap detail. I’ve paired them with a white shirt and black V-neck knit, plus my trusty black bag and Tabis.

I’m definitely feeling the seasonal vibe shift in this outfit. Once again, my only goal is warmth. Uniqlo Heattech thermals are a must for me in winter, so I layered two over a secondhand orange tank for a hit of colour. I finished with my hand-me-down Topman jacket, which feels like wearing a blanket. On the bottom, I wore my mum’s old Zara suit pants with GH Bass penny loafers and thick socks for extra cosiness.

This jacket is one of my favourite winter pieces. I had it made in Vietnam last year and, despite the 40 degree humidity, somehow had the foresight to imagine the wool mini coat of my dreams. It came together from a mix of Pinterest posts and a vision in my head. I chose every detail myself, from the grey check print to the neckline and buttons. It’s so warm, beautifully made and has been on high rotation ever since.
