Following the recent debut of the Surviving R. Kelly docuseries here in Australia, Lifetime has announced it will also air a two-hour follow-up.

Surviving R. Kelly: The Impact will focus on the wide-reaching effects of the original documentary, providing an in-depth look at the public outrage and conversations around sexual assault that erupted following its release.

According to reports, calls to sexual assault hotlines in the US increased by 35 per cent following the series’ debut. #MuteRKelly became a trending hashtag on social media and the artist was eventually dropped from his record label, Sony.

Seven weeks after Surviving R. Kelly aired, the rapper was indicted on 10 counts of aggravated sexual assault, leading to his eventual arrest.

The upcoming feature will include footage from the original docuseries, as well as interviews with journalists, legal experts, non-profit organisations and psychologists. It will also provide a detailed look at his now infamous interview with Gayle King.

Surviving R. Kelly: The Impact is due to air on Lifetime in the US May 4, however there’s no word on an Australian release yet.

You can stream the original docuseries here.
