Everything the Dyspnea designers will be gifting this holiday season

Positively dreamy.

When it comes to gift-giving, there are some people who just nail it. Yes, the holiday season is probably just one long capitalist field day in which we all inch closer towards the planet imploding. But after the emotional rollercoaster of the last year, it’s particularly nice to receive a gift from someone who gets you.

Is that person your 85-year-old grandma? Probably not (thank you for the potpourri though). Instead, it might be the duo behind the magical fashion label, Dyspnea. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, maybe the influx of sparkling pastel-coloured corsets on your social media will. While the brand has become particularly popular in the last few years, designers Rachel and Jameen have been crafting breathtaking collections since 2015.

With ‘knowing who’s cool in local design’ and ‘understanding what people want’ as part of their job descriptions, Rach and Jameen have got gifting season down pat. Let me tell you – my bank account was grossly underprepared for this list. Merging the best in local art, fashion and beauty, the Dyspnea duo have curated their favourite presents for the 2021 gifting season.

Jameen’s list

“I’ve popped together a list of the pieces some of my wonderfully talented friends have produced lately, plus a few little goodies I’ve been eyeing off. Enjoy!”

Samantha McIntyre is the incredibly talented ceramicist behind art practice The Soda Fountain. I’ve actually been saving up to own one of her pieces for a while now. After much patience, I’m delighted to announce that I’ll be picking up my beautiful vase next week! I have been drooling over her pieces ever since discovering her late last year. So a very long-awaited gift from me to me. Just a stunning custom piece to have on the coffee table!

First up, Foile products are just so beautiful on a bathroom shelf – or anywhere for that matter! I’ve already purchased the multi-use Jojoba face oil, which is doing wonders for my dry skin. Foile’s range is inclusive, ethically made and totally gender-neutral, making it making its products perfect for friends who ‘don’t want anything’ this year. I’ve heard amazing things about the Milky Emulsion cleanser – plus the bottles are refillable!

Honestly, Hara produces hands down the softest, comfiest bra I’ve ever worn. They make for the coolest stocking stuffers and they come in a unique range of colours (like olive, mauve, pumpkin and cherry red). With a size range from XS to 5XL, my friends and I need one for every day of the week.

Melbourne-based sustainability consultant and artist Tanzy Owen has recently released this spectacular handpainted calendar of birds she spotted on her walks in lockdown. It’s a beautiful reminder of how special our own neighbourhoods can be and her watercolour portraits are just divine. The perfect gift, especially for the nature-lovers in our lives.

Permanent Vacation cardigan

Ever since seeing one of my good friends in this number, I’ve had my beady eyeballs on it. It’s just a sexy, trans-seasonal, looks-good-on-everyone piece that can be paired with everything. The beautiful seersucker comes in lavender, chocolate and bright orange, so there’s an option for all wardrobes.

Melbourne-based multidisciplinary creative Joshua Space is all about making unique, colourful, thoughtful art. I love the concept behind his new Recycled Planters. They’re made entirely from HDPE plastic, which is generally found in milk bottles, bottle caps and other single-use plastics. It’s great for the thriving plants in your house, like my ever-growing Monstera!

Rach’s list

“While I will be giving most of these goodies away, I’m also writing this in hopes my boyfriend (or Santa) will also see.”

Who isn’t a sucker for some dreamy, pastel, luxurious bedding? And for those who are too fussy for gifted sheets (you know who you are, silk pillowcase owners), a pyjama set is the next best option. Right now, I’m particularly wild on this turquoise tie-dye set.

There’s something about gifting a piece of wall art that feels particularly special (and bougie). Geelong artist Jane Forbes’ pieces have a dreamlike, fresh and colourful feel, serving as a real mood booster on the walls of any room. Gift one of her vibrant paintings and remind your loved ones that there’s beauty in every day.

Dinosaur Designs rock jug

Hello cutie! Dinosaur Designs’ resin design is the jug of all jugs. Holding two litres of liquid, the jewel-toned beauties are a serious upgrade from the usual kitchenware your mum asks for. I’m obsessed with the pink guava colour, but the leaf and lagoon are also amazing.

Emma Mulholland on Holiday socks

Who doesn’t want some fun socks for the holiday season? Even if we do reside in the Southern Hemisphere, there’s something about a novelty sock that makes me feel festive no matter what the weather. One of Emma’s comfy jumpers would be perfect to match.

I’ve got one more thing for the Christmas lunch table (I’m slightly obsessed with tableware right now)! These stunning hand-painted serving platters by Alex and Trahanas are giving me all the eleganza, culture and expensive energy my holiday season needs. The only question is – which one?
