See inside Frida’s world.
A collection of intimate and rare images of Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and their circle of friends is going up for auction.
Taken by Nickolas Muray – a famed portrait photographer and Frida’s former lover – the never-before-seen photos capture Frida and Diego in their home and among friends. Totalling 78 photos, the collection offers a unique peek into the lives of the famous artists.
Alongside Frida, the images also feature composer Carlos Chávez, muralist Roberto Montenegro, actress Margo Albert, painter and writer Mai-Mai Sze, and Cristina Kahlo, Frida’s sister.
Some of the pictures are currently on display at the Frida Kahlo: Appearances Can Be Deceiving exhibition in Brooklyn, while more intimate shots have been provided by an anonymous buyer. Once they go to auction, pieces are expected to start at $15,000 USD.
The auction will take place at Sotheby’s in New York on April 5. You can view select photographs online here.
