BENEE’s new ‘Glitter’ video is a kaleidoscope dream

Words by Ruby Staley

Out of this world.

New Zealand’s own young pop visionary, BENEE, has just unveiled the video for her single, Glitter.

The film clip wonderfully captures the youthfulness of the single as we are taken on an outer-space journey alongside a fuzzy, alien sidekick.

It’s youthful and creative, without being too kitschy, and it’s like a breath of fresh air in an oversaturated and sexualised industry.

The clip feature illustrations from LA-based director, illustrator and Mouldy Peaches bassist Steven Mertens who has also directed music videos for Regina Spektor, Dan Auerbach, The Chainsmokers and Lil Peep.

Speaking of the collaboration with Steven, BENEE said that creating a “fun space-monster video was a perfect example of the BENEE-vision in full flow.”

“Our alien forest was created using a combination of live-action, stop motion, CGI, photo collage, coloured pencil drawings, rear projections and amazing felt sculptures made by Jack Reed,” says Mertens on developing the project.

After the release of her debut EP, FIRE ON MARS, that spans six pop-centric tracks including Glitter, BENEE’s talent went viral.

Among the plethora of recognition the young artist has received, she has amassed over 1.6 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

Catch BENEE at her Australian east headline shows in November kicking off at Brisbane, or onstage at Laneway Festival early next year.o
