Anne Hathaway to star in remake of ‘The Witches’

Children beware.

It seems Anne Hathaway has a knack for playing royalty.

Having taken the throne in The Princess Diaries, Ella Enchanted and Alice in Wonderland, her next role will see her playing a darker kind of queen.

According to Variety, the star has been cast as the Grand High Witch in Warner Bros’ upcoming adaptation of Roald Dahl’s novel The Witches.

Both the book and its first film adaptation in 1990 follow a young boy who encounters a group of children-hating witches.

Hathaway’s role as the coven’s all-powerful leader was originally played by Anjelica Houston, complete with a host of grotesque, witchy prosthetics.

Warner Bros is yet to reveal the film’s release date or any other casting decisions. There’s also no word on whether they’ll be keeping the witches’ original nightmare-inducing appearances, but here’s hoping.
