12 Fashion Journal readers share their most successful Hinge prompt

WORDS BY BRONTE WINNEM

“I won’t shut up about: Anthony Bourdain.”

We’ve all trawled through the countless “I’m competitive about: everything” and the “I go crazy for: you” Hinge prompts when scrolling through the app. These require a deep breath in and a prayer for the strength to live through another day as a single person. That’s what makes a unique answer on a dating profile such a delight when you come across one – they stand out from the monotony of photos of fish being held post-catch and people who think loving travel makes them different.

After a couple of years on and off Hinge, I’ve found the key is ensuring your prompt answers are somewhat open-ended or give people a chance to have a bit of fun with it.  I’m more attracted to profiles that strike a nice balance between being a bit silly and quirky with their photos or prompt choices, while also being somewhat genuine about dating and what they want, so I try to reflect this in my own profile.

Personally, I’ve had success with my answer to the prompt ‘Together we could’. I wrote ‘Hold hands in the supermarket’ and people have replied with a range of responses. Some suitors will ask ‘Which aisle are we standing in?’, others will ask if we can please hold hands at Piedemonte’s (IYKYK), while some just want to reiterate their excitement at the potential of placing their hand in mine.

It’s not a perfect science though. We’re all looking for different things and have varying approaches to both our dating lives and each other’s prompts. What works for some may not work for others, depending on the kind of beau you’re trying to attract. I was curious to see what works for my fellow Hinge users, so I put a call out to Fashion Journal readers to see what their most successful prompt answers are. You lot did not disappoint. Claude*, 25, she/her

“Unusual skills: I can understand an AFL scoreboard.”

Lola*, 25, she/her

“I’ve got a photo of me laughing my head off at my old uni library (slightly intoxicated) sitting on top of a photocopier, very clearly photocopying my bum. The photo prompt above it is ‘Me in the wild’. It by far gets the most responses. People will usually reply with something funny and a bit cheeky like ‘I’m going to need to see a copy of those scans’ or just that they didn’t really think people actually photocopied their bums. I think it works because it shows that I can have a bit of fun and don’t take myself too seriously.”

Jay*, 26, he/him

“Mine is about how I change my sheets every Sunday.”

Margot*, 20, she/her

“One thing I’d love to know about you is: How often you think about the Roman Empire. Obviously, this one gets a reaction out of men.”

Liv*, 24, she/her

“I’m bi, and I’ve noticed this one is massively dependent on the gender (and obviously the vibe) of the person responding to the prompt. I’ve had the most replies to ‘My Love Language is: Anal’ from men, which was not a shock but surprisingly a good way to weed them out. The most replies from women/femme people have come from ‘The first time I knew I was gay was: Keira Knightley’ and are often along the lines of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean, Atonement, Bend It Like Beckham or Pride and Prejudice?’.”

Louis*, 23, they/them

“I won’t shut up about: Anthony Bourdain.”

Harriet*, 23, she/her

“I get the most responses from the prompt ‘The award I should be nominated for’ and my answer is ‘Driving manual while eating a bahn mi’. It’s the simple things (apparently) that work.”

Darcy*, 25, he/him

“Green flags I look out for: Hand-eye coordination… People either have it or they don’t.”

Annabelle*, 25, she/her

“The prompt poll that says ‘Would you rather’. I offer a ‘Dad joke, a fun fact, or I roast you’. Men are a glutton for punishment and they always choose to be roasted.”

Hazel*, 24, she/her

“I had ‘The one thing you should know about is: I’m an expert at Adam Sander impressions’. I purposely spelled it wrong so that it got more hits. I found that spelling things wrong or being a bit weird gets the most replies.”

Tay*, 24, she/her

“I have ‘Should I get a fringe?’. I already cut the fringe months ago but have left the prompt up, so when people tell me not to get it or that it won’t suit me, I get to see their reactions when I tell them I have already done it. Very entertaining.”

Stella*, 28, she/her

“Dating me is like: Finding 50 bucks in an old wallet i.e. ‘a nice surprise’, but some people can be kind of rude and say things like ‘What, old and used?’.”
