Road Test: I asked a tarot reader for dating advice

words by kaya martin

Read to filth.

I’ll take dating advice from just about anyone at this point. My love life is the messiest it’s ever been, full of sporadic Hinge dates, way too much wine, waking up in beds without sheets and the bi-monthly ceremony of swearing off men and going ‘monk mode’.

My mum, who was my age when she met my dad, called me to tell me I should go on that show Indian Matchmaker. We’re not even Indian. If there was ever a right moment for spiritual intervention, it would be now.

This is how I found myself surrounded by crystals, scented oils and bundles of sage at Thornbury Apothecary. I’d been nervous all day – I’d never had a reading done before. Would she be able to see into my soul, past my sweet and friendly facade and straight into my truly debaucherous core? My dad was always terrified of psychics because he was afraid of finding out something bad was waiting in his future. I guess I was scared of that as well. If I was going to die alone, did I really want to know?

When energy healer, reiki healer and tarot reader Anna Stella came to greet me, I was a bit surprised. She’s blonde, with a kind face and a gentle demeanour – nothing about her screamed witch to me. She took me into the treatment room, which was small and warm, and we sat down at a desk.

She told me there were three topics people came in searching for answers on. The most popular was love, which was also the most fun for her. After that was health, followed by wealth. In past readings, she’s uncovered everything from cheating scandals to prison time.

When you are doing this, it will come up with whatever it needs to tell me,” she says. Anna’s method of reading involves incorporating the cards into a greater practice of healing, using the Light Seer’s deck to help guide her clients along their journey. She says the cards illuminate certain things that are holding people back, like trauma or issues from past relationships.

“Clients are shocked because I just walk out of here going, ‘Here’s your homework, here’s what to do’,” she says. She restricts her clients to one visit every six months because she says they need to work on themselves and come back when their lives have moved forward.

To begin, she shuffled the cards and tapped on them to set the deck before handing them over to me. I gave them an awkward shuffle as well, holding my intentions in my mind, before cutting them into three piles and picking one. She picked up my pile and laid it out on the table in front of us, flipping each card like the page of a book. She asks her clients not to speak during the process.

Once she started reading, everything came out quite fast. She told me I’m transforming into who I want to be because, in my recent past, I was in a relationship where I couldn’t fully do that (true). She said I travelled to Australia to grow (true, although my Canadian accent may have given that away).

She said there’s a man – isn’t there always? – and he’s a bit of a romantic. I started feeling weird when she correctly noted where I had met him. “I told you I’d figure it out!” she laughed. Later in the reading, she had more to say about this figure; that he was older, that I seemed naive and innocent to him (represented by a card featuring a lamb and a lion) and that I was more driven by curiosity than anything else.

I was taken aback by the decisiveness and confidence with which she stated these claims, all of which were pretty spot on. In the end, she said it wasn’t meant to be (sad face), but it’ll be a fun fling that teaches me some important lessons and helps with my healing.

The cards covered a lot more than just my love life. Throughout the hour, we touched on my family, travel, career, past relationships and friendships, all at such a dizzying pace that I couldn’t fully process it until later. According to Anna, there was no true love in my cards for at least the next six months, which was fine by me as my hot girl summer was just getting started.

“Your love at the moment is fun and free,” she told me. While not everything that came up in the reading was entirely correct, there was enough uncanny accuracy to have me rethinking many aspects of my life and reevaluating where I’m putting my energy. I left feeling a little unnerved that a stranger knew so much about my personal life but reassured that even though my love life is chaotic, I’m right where I’m supposed to be.
