FJ editors share their top Valentine’s Day gift ideas for loved ones

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSICA GRILLI

WORDS BY GIULIA BRUGLIERA

For all kinds of love.

I love any celebration of love and unlike many, I’m a sucker for Valentine’s Day. To me, it’s less about celebrating my partner and more an opportunity to remind all the people in my life how much I love them.

My Valentine’s Day is typically full of messages and love notes from friends and family. A message that reads ‘I love you’ is typically more than enough to spread the warm, gooey feelings but my love language is gift-giving, so I like to go one step further. And so does the rest of the FJ team.

You don’t have to spend a lot (or anything) to show someone your love. It’s more the thought behind the gift that matters. Below is what the FJ team is giving to our loved ones this Valentine’s Day.

Mali Bakes Love Angels Cake

I have grand plans to bake something sweet to bring to the office and show the FJ girlies how much I love them. But I’m terrible at baking and equally lazy when it comes to domestic tasks, so it’s much more likely I’ll buy something to bring in. I’ve been eyeing the Valentine’s Day cakes at Mali Bakes. They’re almost too pretty to eat, but we’ve never been a team to shy away from a challenge, and there are lots of flavour options to choose from. I’m thinking an olive oil and ricotta cake with blackberry and fennel jam, sea salt and honey will go down a treat.

While most Valentine’s Day traditions are typically rooted in celebrating romantic and platonic loves, who says this can’t extend to self-love? This Valentine’s Day, I’m eyeing this Silver Diamond Signet Ring from Sydney-based slow jewellery label, Westhill. Designed, made and hand-polished in Australia, the ring features a glistening lab-grown diamond set by hand into the shoulder. It’s understated yet timeless, making it the perfect everyday staple for you or a loved one.

Sense of Self gift voucher

Picked by: Cait, Fashion Journal’s Digital Editor

Sense of Self is a sleek, architectural bathhouse in Collingwood that “draws on global practices to meet modern needs”. With a Scandinavian-esque feel to it, wiling away an afternoon in the bathhouse (there are fluffy robes, cushy couches and books aplenty) is a rejuvenating but romantic way. In my opinion, it’s the ideal way for single people to spend Valentine’s Day. I’ll be shouting one of my closest friends a bathhouse entry, and will go with her as a wholesome friend date.

Graedance Midnight Earring

There’s something inherently romantic about jewellery – and I’m not just talking about rings. A few years back I purchased a chainlink silver sleeper earring for my boyfriend, and he hasn’t taken it off since. He even lost it and repurchased the same one within the hour. As wonderful as that is, his jewellery needs an update – which is why this Valentine’s Day, I’m gifting him a Midnight Earring from Melbourne-based brand Graedance. The genderless, organic shape makes it more interesting than your standard sleeper, and detachable rings mean he can switch it up regularly.

There’s something so empowering about purchasing a good set of lingerie and wearing it for yourself, rather than someone else. The lingerie from Eco Intimates feels as good to purchase as it is aesthetically pleasing, embodying a slow fashion ethos with its sustainable and ethical practices. I’ve had my eye on this organic lingerie set in fine lines made in a GOTS-certified organic cotton voile, and this Valentine’s Day feels like a perfect time to treat myself to it.

As we’ve discussed, Valentine’s Day is about showing appreciation for those you love, platonic or otherwise. I always make an effort to give my close friends a card, a cookie or at the very least, a heartfelt text message. This year, I’m taking it up a notch with a beginner’s pottery class at Collingwood ceramic studio, Slow Clay. It’s a fun excuse to spend quality time with one of my nearest and dearest, plus I’ve always wanted someone to hold me à la Patrick and Demi in Ghost.

Valentine’s Day shouldn’t be restricted to romantic love, so I always make an effort to celebrate with my girlfriends too. Since trialling (and falling in love with) Vyrao’s fragrances earlier last year, I’ve decided to buy the brand’s High Five set to distribute to my best friends. I quite like the idea of us all wearing complementary scents and it also makes a thoughtful gift, as I’ll assign each perfume to best match my friends’ personalities.

Everything I Know About Love by Dolly Alderton

A post shared by Josie (@what.josie.reads)

As someone who’s spent a good chunk of my twenties either alone or casually dating, Dolly Alderton’s book Everything I Know About Love really resonated with me (as it did for many women in my demographic). The book explores Dolly’s tumultuous love life and her realisation – one that many women have during this period of their lives – that our friends are the true loves of our lives. I’ll be gifting this to a friend who recently went through a particularly rough breakup. I hope it provides her with the same comfort it gave me.

Cleopatra’s Bling Garance Ring*

Picked by: Izzy, Fashion Journal’s Editorial Assistant

I’m a big jewellery collector, and (subtle hint) my Valentine’s Day would be forever made with a piece from Melbourne-based label, Cleopatra’s Bling. At the very top of my wishlist is the solid gold Garance Ring, a handmade piece inspired by the flowers that bloom in France across the fields of Provence. An ode to craftsmanship of all kinds, the ring’s deep red garnet – surrounded by 14k gold detailing – reflects the vibrant colour of garance blooms. For something a little smaller, I love the delicacy of the Delta Stacker Ring.

Saule Andy Robe in Olive Stripe

If I could gift one thing to my partner, it would be more downtime for himself. He works insane hours and is excellent at balancing the demands of his job while also making time with family, friends and me a priority. While I can’t necessarily give him the gift of time, I can offer something to make his downtime a little more luscious. Saule’s Andy Robe is in my sights; a relaxed, genderless design made from Japanese cotton seersucker for breezy dressing.

There’s something subtly empowering about wearing matching lingerie, a sentiment that’s shared by our friends at Sotto Brand. Launched in 2019, the brand is best known for minimal-yet-elevated pieces that blend sexy silhouettes with luxe fabrications. The word ‘sotto’ is Italian for beneath, a fitting reference to the brand’s design process, as they reinterpret the capsule wardrobe from the base up. From mesh bras to lace underwear, spoil one of the leading ladies in your life this V-Day.

A Daily Blooms bouquet*

Picked by: Georgi, Fashion Journal’s Partnerships and Campaign Coordinator

My mum and I have had little Valentine’s Day traditions for years, and unfortunately this year we won’t be able to celebrate in person. I’m keeping up our tradition by sending her a flower delivery from Daily Blooms, who have created a series of unique bouquets and gift hampers exclusively for Valentine’s Day, including the Forever Luxe Bouquet. If you’re a romantic at heart looking for a grand gesture, they’re also running a competition for a personalised ‘Love Actually’ style delivery valued at $350 if pre-ordered for the day before February 10th.
