James Blake: The Colour in Anything
Kinda the same.
Can we take bets on who’s going to drop the next surprise album? As a reviewer, it’s starting to get a little tiring.
That said, opening track ‘Radio Silence’ is possibly my favourite thing James Blake has ever released. It’s a perfect example of the soulful, electronic melancholy that’s become synonymous with Blake’s work.
But after three full length albums, it would be nice to shake things up a bit. There’s synths, piano and vocal distortion; it’s definitely a James Blake album. The Colour in Anything is a little looser than his previous records with its production, but I feel like the best material here is when he adheres to more traditional song structures.
Otherwise, it all tends to blur into the background a little too much. Bon Iver cameo track ‘I Need A Forest Fire’ is another standout that highlights this. James, it might be time to go pop!
