I’m a fashion writer and DJ, here’s how I style my headphones

Put your headphones on.

Since going freelance to pursue DJing full time, dressing for work no longer consists of my version of the corporate uniform: ballet flats, suit pants and a button-down cardigan.

With the freedom to wear what I want, I’m dressing not only for comfort (hello Ugg boots all day), but also to express myself as an artist through my clothing. In the spirit of ‘enclothed cognition’, I typically feel better, more productive, and my most creative when I like my outfit.

This looks different every day, but the one accessory that stays the same is a pair of headphones. For me, it’s either in-ear or soundproof over-the-head styles – the crispiest, clearest audio is top priority. I’m also looking for audio accessories to go with my outfits.

Whether I’m discovering new music on a hot girl walk or prepping for a set and gigging, here’s how I style my favourite JBL headphones.

Admin day

The start of my week usually involves setting up to work in a cafe, clearing my inbox and invoicing for any gigs that happened the previous weekend. On these days, I like to keep it casual and not think about my outfit too much: a matching sweat set, or baggy jeans and a long sleeve is my go-to. Here I’m wearing baggy pinstripe pants, a Neuw Denim cotton shirt with a Sister Studios singlet underneath, and a thrifted coat over the top.

Crate digging

Whether I’m looking for digital tracks online or perusing my favourite record stores like Skydiver in Fitzroy, I like to look good while I’m looking for inspiration. A skirt or jeans, a cute baby tee, my everyday sling bag from Apres Studio and matching JBL LIVE 780 NC headphones make me feel put together while I immerse myself in new sounds.

DJ gig

When I’m performing, it’s important for me to feel not only unrestricted but also accurately represented in my outfit. I’m always looking for pieces that allow me to dance and sweat first and foremost. I wear local, independent brands where I can – tonight it’s a set by Kid Condo and a bolero by Mujo Made with a pair of platform Roc boots. My JBL headphones are close by, keeping me plugged into my playlist prep on the way to the gig.

Recovery mode

Balance is key, so keeping active on my days off is imperative as a DJ. To make sure I’m comfortable, I reach for my Salomon sneakers, a loosely fitted dress (like this one from Steele), or my classic Lululemon flares with a T-Shirt and light spray jacket. My favourite addition to my matcha walk look is my trusty wireless JBL LIVE 780 NCs that keep me plugged in to the latest pop girly’s album, or a nostalgic playlist to recharge my batteries after a weekend of electronic music.

In transit outfit

Whether I’m taking the 96 tram, Ubering, or even flying to a gig, I prefer wearing my JBL Soundgear Clips because they’re super light and virtually undetectable. Here, I’m in transit listening to ambient tunes in my peak airport outfit: a cosy tracksuit set, stretchy headband and comfortable earbuds.
